Ohio State visits Iowa at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, October 3 with a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff on CBS. The Buckeyes are a 14-point favorite with the total at 45.5, so the market expects them to win without much of a shootout.
Iowa has been the story on defense, allowing 8.0 points a game and zero rushing touchdowns through four contests. That is a hard front to run against, though it does not automatically mean Ohio State throws more than it normally would.
I am approaching this through the player market rather than the side. Here are the three college football player props I have landed on.
Ohio State vs Iowa Props & Best Bets
Odds from BetMGM as of Oct. 3.
Julian Sayin Passing Props
- Julian Sayin 300+ passing yards, +130 (at BetMGM)
Julian Sayin has 1,206 passing yards with 10 touchdowns, one interception and a 72.2% completion rate through four games. His weekly totals read 320, 278, 241 and 367.
That is two games already at 300 or better, and at least 278 in three of the four. Getting plus money at +130 on something he has done half the time is the whole appeal for me.
The downside is straightforward. Iowa has allowed 8.0 points a game, and Sayin’s 241 against Kent State shows he can land under this number without facing a defense like this one. The price is what makes the swing worth taking.
Jeremiah Smith Receiving Yards
- Jeremiah Smith 125+ receiving yards, -149 (at BetMGM)
Jeremiah Smith has 33 catches for 617 yards and seven touchdowns in four games. He has gone past 125 receiving yards in three of them, and the lone miss was an 85-yard day against Kent State.
The 12-catch, 217-yard game against Illinois is his season high, but the 151 and 164 before it show this is not a one-week spike. Paying -149 for an outcome he has hit three times in four sits fine with me.
Smith has caught at least five passes in each game, with eight or more in three. His 85-yard outing still shows why I am treating 125+ as a bet with a real chance of missing against Iowa.
Jeremiah Smith Anytime Touchdown
- Jeremiah Smith anytime touchdown, -278 (at BetMGM)
Smith has scored in three of four games: two against Ball State, one against Texas and four against Illinois. Seven touchdowns in four weeks is why this number is as short as it is.
You are laying a lot at -278, and the Kent State game where he was shut out is the reminder that this is not a formality. If you want a longer price, two or more touchdowns is available at +180, though that asks for considerably more.
I will stick with the single score. If you are opening an account for Saturday, the BetMGM promo code covers the current welcome offer.
Ohio State vs Iowa Props Recap
I am treating these as individual bets, with overlapping exposure to Ohio State’s passing game. Sayin at 300+ is the plus-money swing, Smith at 125+ is the steadiest of the group, and the anytime touchdown is the shortest price with the least margin.
Iowa’s 8.0 points allowed per game is the argument against every one of them, and I am not going to talk around it. Worth lining these up against the wider college football odds board before you commit.
