  • The reeling Philadelphia Eagles received more bad news when it was revealed that quarterback Jalen Hurts has a blood clot in his calf and will be out for Sunday’s Week 6 contest with the Carolina Panthers
  • Philly was already under siege with injuries and Lane Johnson’s abrupt retirement; now, the inexperienced Tanner McKee will start at QB
  • Prediction markets have reacted swiftly to the news of Hurts’s injury, as traders get the chance to jump in based on how they think the Eagles’ season will go

The Eagles’ playoff chances were already in question given their poor start, having lost 3 of their first 5 games, and prediction markets for Eagles Playoff futures are not exactly confident in brighter days ahead.

On Thursday afternoon, Ian Rappoport reported that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts would be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers after tests revealed a blood clot in Hurts’ calf. Philadelphia will now have to move forward without its starting QB for the time being as the Eagles look to steady the ship and get back to .500 with a home matchup vs. Carolina.

The loss to the Jaguars in London was especially devastating after taking a 17-16 lead with 8 seconds remaining. A 53-yard kickoff return put the Jaguars in position to kick the game-winning field goal. It was an egregious special teams failure and highlights how out of sorts the team has looked so far in 2026.

Still, the NFC East is mediocre at best, with the New York Giants in first place at 3-1-1 and the Dallas Cowboys tied with Philly at 2-3. The Washington Commanders can’t get out of their own way and are bringing up the rear at 1-3-1.

There is still time for the Eagles to right themselves. But without Hurts, that road just got significantly tougher. Prediction markets offer the chance to trade on what the future holds for the Eagles, and whether or not they will make the playoffs.

Eagles Playoff Futures Markets After Jalen Hurts Injury

The NFL playoff qualifiers market encompassing every team in the league is approaching nearly $3 million in volume.

Currently, the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills are the only teams trading at 90% or above to make the playoffs. As for the Eagles, in the aftermath of the Hurts news, their market probability dropped by 7%, with their implied probability now around 25% to be a postseason participant.

For those who want to trade on Eagles Playoff futures, or any other markets, the Kalshi promo code offers new users a $55 bonus after $25 in trades have been completed.

Can the Eagles Turn Their Season Around?

The Eagles are annually one of the most turmoil-filled teams in the NFL, with players bickering with coaches, coaches screaming at fans, and players at each other’s throats. Despite that, they have won two Super Bowls in the past 10 years and have only missed the playoffs twice in that time. In 2026, they were already staggering before Hurts was diagnosed with a blood clot and ruled out, with a full diagnosis, treatment plan, and timeline yet to be determined.

The injury happened not long after the team released veteran backup QB Andy Dalton, though there’s speculation he could be brought back.

In steps Tanner McKee, taken out of Stanford in the 6th round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s thrown 88 passes in his pro career with a 61.4 completion percentage, 1 TD, and 1 pick. He’s big (6’6″), has a rocket throwing arm, and is a classic pocket passer. That is relevant for the Eagles as they formulate a game plan without Hurts. Hurts is mobile, and his scrambling is a key part of his game. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion will need to adjust for McKee…or will he?

Mannion was a backup QB for Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams and worked under Matt LaFleur with the Green Bay Packers. That style of offense is simply not catered to Hurts’s strengths.

Mannion’s scheme calls for the QB to be under center. While Hurts prefers to work out of the shotgun, McKee, a more traditional drop-back passer, could click with this system. As Philly fans and national commentators wonder about head coach Nick Sirianni’s job security, the reality here is that Mannion might end up with a QB better fit for his style of play.

As fans panic and the Eagles’ playoff percentages on the prediction markets drop, there are three factors to think about:

  • McKee could be a better fit for Mannion’s scheme
  • Five of the Eagles’ next eight opponents are teams currently under .500
  • Through Week 5, the NFC East has just one team with a winning record (NY Giants)

It’s too early to think about a QB controversy, and Hurts’s status is completely unknown. But if they get their injured players on offense and defense back in the coming weeks and McKee plays competently in Hurts’s stead, there is great value in saying that the Eagles will rise to the top of a very winnable, and borderline terrible, division where the other three teams’ problems are as bad or worse than theirs.
