Liverpool vs Villarreal Best Bets for the Champions League
  • Liverpool is favored at -188 vs. Villarreal in the Champions League
  • Over 3.5 goals (+117) is my top goals prediction
  • Alexander Isak anytime scorer (+110 at BetMGM) offers value

The UEFA Champions League league phase continues Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as Liverpool (2-0-0, 6 points, +4 GD) hosts Villarreal (1-0-1, 3 points, +1 GD) at Anfield, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 PM ET. Under the 36-team format, the top eight teams advance directly to the Round of 16, while those finishing ninth through 24th qualify for a two-legged knockout playoff.

Liverpool enters the matchup as a heavy home favorite after winning its first two matches. The English side will look to maintain its perfect European record and control the tempo, while Villarreal arrives as a road underdog after collecting three points from its opening two games.

With both teams showing attacking potential and defensive vulnerabilities, the goals market and Alexander Isak’s anytime goalscorer odds offer two angles worth examining.

Liverpool vs. Villarreal Odds

Bet TypeLiverpoolDrawVillarreal
Moneyline-188+333+450
Total GoalsOver 2.5 (-225)Under 2.5 (+175)

Odds as of October 19 from Bet365.

Liverpool enters this matchup as a clear home favorite. After removing the sportsbook’s margin, the normalized implied probabilities give Liverpool a 61.2% chance of winning, compared with 21.7% for a draw and 17.1% for a Villarreal victory.

At -188 odds, a $10 bet on Liverpool would return a $5.32 profit, for a total payout of $15.32. A $10 wager on Villarreal at +450 would generate a $45 profit, for a total payout of $55.

The Over 2.5 goals line has moved from -138 to -225, making it more expensive to back at least three goals. These movements show that the prices have shortened on both Liverpool’s handicap and the Over. However, odds movement alone does not establish whether public betting, professional action, or other market factors drove the changes.

Liverpool vs Villarreal Prediction & Best Bets

  • Pick: Over 3.5 Goals (+117; 56% on Kalshi)
  • Pick: Liverpool Moneyline (-178; 64% on Kalshi)
Prediction Markets

Kalshi
Liverpool to Win
64%
Over 3.5 Goals
56%

My two main betting angles are Liverpool to win and Over 3.5 goals, with the latter supported by both teams’ early-season scoring and defensive numbers.

Liverpool’s 64% implied probability on Kalshi translates to odds of approximately -178. However, my no-vig estimate based on the sportsbook moneyline is 61.2%, so I would not describe the Kalshi price as a mathematical edge based on that estimate alone.

My preferred angle is Over 3.5 goals at a price equivalent to +117. Liverpool’s matches have averaged 6.0 total goals in this tournament, while Villarreal’s have averaged 4.5. Both teams have also conceded 75% of their goals in the second half, a trend worth considering when assessing the potential for late scoring. These figures come from a small sample, however, and do not guarantee another high-scoring game.

Top Player Prop Value: Anytime Goalscorer Bets

  • Pick: Alexander Isak Anytime Goalscorer (+110 at BetMGM)

Alexander Isak is my preferred player prop at +110 at BetMGM. Bet365 lists the same anytime goalscorer market at -110, making BetMGM the more attractive option based on the available prices. However, a better price does not automatically make a bet profitable.

Villarreal have conceded an average of 2.0 goals per game, while Liverpool average 9.0 corners per match. These figures suggest opportunities for Liverpool to create chances, although they do not establish Isak’s individual scoring probability.

Liverpool vs Villarreal: Head-to-Head History

Liverpool and Villarreal have met four times in European competition, with Liverpool winning three matches and Villarreal winning once. Their most recent encounters came in the 2021-22 Champions League semi-finals, when Liverpool won 2-0 at Anfield before securing a 3-2 victory in Spain. In the 2015-16 Europa League semi-finals, Liverpool advanced after losing the first leg 1-0 and winning the return match 3-0 at home.

Liverpool lead the head-to-head series 3-1, with an 8-3 aggregate score. However, past results do not guarantee another high-scoring contest. The two teams scored four goals across their 2016 meetings and seven across their 2022 tie.

Liverpool vs Villarreal: Team Stats Comparison

The per-game averages highlight Liverpool’s attacking advantage heading into this Champions League matchup. The Reds average more goals, shots, shots on target, and corner kicks than Villarreal.

StatisticLiverpool (5th)Villarreal (14th)
Goals Scored4.02.5
Goals Conceded2.02.0
Total Shots17.515.0
Shots on Target8.06.0
Avg Possession54.5%50.0%
Corner Kicks9.05.5
Yellow Cards0.52.5

Liverpool’s attacking numbers stand out, with averages of 4.0 goals and 17.5 shots per game. Villarreal’s 2.5 goals per match suggest the visitors can also contribute offensively, setting up an intriguing goals market.

Liverpool’s 54.5% average possession and nine corners per game point to greater attacking pressure. Villarreal, meanwhile, averages 2.5 yellow cards per match, compared with Liverpool’s 0.5, suggesting a greater disciplinary burden.

Defensively, both teams concede an average of 2.0 goals per game. That shared vulnerability supports the case for considering the Over, although these figures alone do not guarantee a high-scoring match.

Liverpool vs Villarreal Injury Report

Both teams face key absences ahead of this Champions League clash.

  • Liverpool: Jeremie Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai, Giovanni Leoni, Amara Nallo, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike
  • Villarreal: Nicolas Pepe, Tajon Buchanan

Frimpong and Szoboszlai are notable absences for Liverpool. Frimpong has contributed one goal and two assists, while Szoboszlai’s absence could weaken the team’s ability to transition quickly from defense to attack.

Villarreal will also miss attackers Nicolas Pepe and Tajon Buchanan. Their absence reduces the visitors’ pace and counterattacking threat, putting more pressure on Santiago Mourino to contribute in transition. Despite these absences, both teams’ defensive vulnerabilities remain potential targets.
