With the upcoming NBA season just around the corner, we’re taking a look at the possible contenders for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
In recent memory, Lou Williams has stood above the rest, winning in consecutive years in both 2018 and ’19. Former Clippers teammate Montrezl Harrell, who jumped ship and joined the Lakers last week, came away with the award last season.
Williams once again opens as the favorite for 2020-21, with Harrell’s new teammate Dennis Schroder right on his heels.

Can Williams Win His Fourth Award?
There is no doubting what Williams is capable of on the floor, but he could end up with a different organization before opening day in less than a month. He’s been linked heavily in trade talks, with just one year remaining on his current deal.
Nonetheless, Lou-Will has been an extremely efficient scorer over the last few seasons. He’s averaged 20.4 points per night across three years with the Clippers while shooting an impressive 48 percent from the field.

There simply aren’t many players in the NBA who can put up such solid numbers off the bench. No matter what team he ends up on though, Williams will get buckets thanks to his ability to create for himself and make threes
Schroder is Definitely in Contention
Schroder finished as runner up to Harrell last season for the Sixth Man of the Year Award after enjoying a marvellous campaign with a resurgent Oklahoma City Thunder team.
The German guard was OKC’s primary scorer off the bench, putting up just under 19 per game while shooting 47 percent from the field.
He should see his fair share of minutes with the Lakers this season after being traded last week, and will be one of their go-to guys on the second unit alongside Harrell. LA has lacked a versatile guard like Schroder –especially last season – despite their title run. He could also see substantial time in the starting lineup as well.

With the 27-year old now playing alongside the likes of LeBron and AD who could both enhance his game, Schroder should definitely be considered a legitimate contender for this award once again.
Other Names to Keep an Eye On
The reigning award winner in Montrezl Harrell must be considered a favorite, especially since he’ll also be playing alongside James and Davis. The 6-foot-7 big man is a force around the hoop and will definitely flourish with the defending champions.
Harrell posted a career-high in points and rebounds last season with the Clips, dropping 18.6 per contest while also grabbing 7.1 boards. The 26-year old thrives coming off the bench, starting just two games last season and still playing almost 30 minutes per night.
Tyler Herro is another name that must be included in the conversation for this award. The former Kentucky standout burst onto the scene last season, helping the Miami Heat make a cinderella run all the way to the NBA Finals.
Herro started just five games last season but was efficient, shooting just under 40 percent from downtown while collecting 13.5 points per game. But it was in the playoffs where the rookie took it to another level, averaging 16 points.

Herro showed serious maturity and confidence by draining crucial shots in big moments and without him, the Heat certainly wouldn’t have gone this far in the postseason.
Having taken massive strides in his first season in the league, expect Herro to be a key piece for Erik Spoelstra’s second unit. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the conversation for the Sixth Man of the Year Award.
Best Bet
I personally believe Harrell and Herro will both have extremely good seasons. But whether Williams stays with the Clippers or not, I like him as the current favorite to win this award.
The 34-year old has shown lots of consistency throughout his career no matter where he’s played, and after barely missing out on winning it last year, I believe Lou-Will should take it home in ’21.
Pick: Lou Williams +350
