This is a fight they tried to make happen a couple of times, but things didn’t pan out. Well, third time’s the charm as the two are finally set to lock horns.

Billy Joe Saunders’ Second WBO Defense

There was some dialogue about Saunders fighting top pound-for-pound pugilist Canelo Alvarez in May but, the coronavirus pandemic got in the way of those plans.

This outing marks the first bout of the calendar year for Saunders who last competed in November for his inaugural title defense. He’s looking to make another big impression as he steps into the ring for his 30th pro bout.

The idea is that the winner of this fight will be positioned opposite the winner of Canelo vs Smith at some point in the new year. With the backdrop of that consideration, some are overlooking Murray in this bout, but don’t include Saunders as one of those people.

He is expecting to get in some rounds here to shake off any potential ring rust leading into his 2021 campaign.

Martin Murray’s Last Chance at Championship Glory?

As Saunders steps in for his first bout of 2020, so does Murray. The two enter with a comparable level of ring rust heading into this one.

This is a do or die moment for Murray who has had multiple prior title bids against names like Gennady Golovkin and Sergio Martinez that ended up falling short.

At 38 years old with title bids across two divisions (middleweight and now super middleweight), this is a high-pressure moment for Martin Murray to perform.

The two match up well stylistically. I think there will be some viewer-friendly level of parity between the two with Saunders still leading things on the scorecards.

I think during the mid to later rounds, Saunders will really get his rhythm and start putting a pace on Murray.

This prizefight is scheduled for twelve rounds, and I think it’s quite likely this one goes the distance.

The sub-fifty percent KO are of Saunders and the durability of Murray (has only been stopped once as a pro and it was by GGG who’s one of the most fearsome punchers of this generation, pound for pound) leads me to this conclusion.

There are prop bets out there for the fight going the distance (-305) and Saunders after twelve rounds (-265) which present good value.

I see Saunders putting in a masterclass performance, and I would bet on the champ running away with a lopsided decision victory.

Pick: Billy Joe Saunders (-2300)
