Jamel Herring and Jonathan Oquendo enter the ring tomorrow (July 14th, 8:00 PM ET) for the main event of the latest Top Rank card on ESPN from The Bubble at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. These two will lock horns for the WBO world super featherweight championship.

Herring and Oquendo were initially supposed to fight on July 2nd, but Herring tested positive for COVID-19 in late June. He overcame the fever, says he is feeling his normal self again, and now fight fans have a title bout to look forward to.

Below, find the odds for the main event and co-main along with best bets.

Herring vs Oquendo Odds

Fighter Odds

Jamel Herring’s Championship Resume

Herring has yet to compete in 2020 but wants to continue the momentum from a monumental 2019 campaign. He captured his WBO gold and defended the strap with a pair of unanimous decision wins. He bested Masayuki Ito in May to win the belt and logged his first successful defense against Lamont Roach in November.

At one point Herring was largely unheralded by some in the boxing community but he is making those detractors eat their words. He has an unassailably solid work ethic and his confidence should be at an all-time high.

Jonathan Oquendo’s Chances as a Contender

Jonathan Oquendo is looking to level up in competition. His last outing saw him defeat Charles Huerta via unanimous decision to win the WBO latino super featherweight belt. Oquendo looks to step to the world title tier in this outing.

Prior bids for international and world titles have not worked out for Oquendo. This is a key career crossroads moment for him. Oquendo could really play the role of spoiler for some prospective future matchups for Herring this calendar year.

Shakur Stevenson also vacated his WBO featherweight belt and assumed the role of number-one contender for Jamel Herring’s belt.

An unavoidable facet of this fight is what effect, if any, Herring’s recent bout with coronavirus will have on him. Does it impede his ability to push the pace in later rounds? Does it hinder his chances to sustain his effort for the entirety of the bout? Only time will tell.

Herring vs Oquendo Tale of the Tape

Herring

Oquendo
21-2 Record 31-6
10 Knockouts 19
5’10 Height 5’4
70″ Reach 67″
Lamont Roach, Masayuki Ito, John Vincent Moralde Significant Wins Jose Lopez, Gabino Cota, Jose Luis Araiza
Southpaw Stance Orthodox

Neither man has a mind-blowing KO rate so I see this or being decided by the judges. I ultimately lean towards Jamel Herring despite his recent health situation. He has a notable enough reach advantage, crafty southpaw angles, and is more proven at the world championship level. I think the champion retains and wins via unanimous decision.

Pick: Jamel Herring (-1600)

Main Card Picks for Herring vs Oquendo

  1. Mikaela Mayer vs Helen Joseph: Much like the headlining Herring, Mayer had to overcome her own bout with COVID-19. Also like the Herring bout, a narrative that invariably will be there is “how does the favored fighter here look after a bout with COVID-19′”? Though Joseph has been in there with some top-level talent like Delfine Persoon, I still see Mayer getting it done. Mikaela Mayer maintains her unbeaten pro record.   Pick: Mikaela Mayer (-1000)
