Once again in the main event of the biggest boxing event of the week, Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-2) looks to defend the WBA ‘super’ welterweight title against former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez (22-2). Romero and Lopez are putting their friendship aside for one night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Romero returns for his first title defense 15 months after he shockingly upset Ryan Garcia in Times Square to win the title. The WBA has since upgraded him to ‘super’ welterweight champion to sanction a ‘regular’ title fight between Jack Catterall and Shakhram Giyasov in May.
Lopez, who also fought on the Times Square card, has competed once since Romero’s crowning victory and ended up on the wrong side of one of the biggest fights of the year. ‘The Takeover’ definitively lost the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles to Shakur Stevenson in the Ring VI main event in January. He announced his decision to move up to 147 pounds the day after the loss.

Despite being the challenger in a new weight class, oddsmakers are confident that Lopez will get his hand raised on Saturday night. The 29-year-old is closing as the -300 favorite, giving him an implied win probability of 75 percent. Romero comes back at +225 to retain his title.
Vegas is also expecting Lopez to win the fight by decision, juicing the Over 10.5 round prop to -450 and lining his decision prop at -140.
Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero vs. Teofimo Lopez Tale of the Tape
Although Romero has been competing at welterweight for a few years, he began his career at lightweight, like Lopez. As such, the competitors share near-identical frames, with Lopez coming in one inch taller than the champion.
Romero and Lopez are also knotted with 13 knockouts apiece, though Lopez needed five more fights to get there. Romero is one year older than the 29-year-old Lopez, who shares his orthodox stance.
Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero vs. Teofimo Lopez Prediction
Romero was already one of the most volatile boxers in the world, and over a year away from the ring will not have changed that. Sometimes he comes out looking great and goes toe-to-toe with Gervonta Davis or executes a perfect game plan against Ryan Garcia, and other times he gets run over by Isaac Cruz and barely sneaks past Jackson Mariñez. It can be very difficult to tell which version of ‘Rolly’ will show up for any given fight.
The same could be said for Lopez, who could look like a star or come out flat on any given night.
Yet, at their cores, Lopez is favored for a reason. He is the better boxer with the superior jab, footwork and defense to give him a sturdier base than that of Romero. The champion has power, but he struggles to set it up at times against quicker, more athletic fighters, giving him a tendency to over-throw. Lopez has become an exceptional counter-puncher over the years and will get many of those opportunities in this matchup.
Both are unorthodox in their own ways, but Romero hasn’t yet fought a boxer with as many tools as Lopez. With so many sparring rounds in the gym between them, Lopez has significantly more layers to his game.
That familiarity with each other has historically resulted in longer fights. While both of Romero’s losses thus far have come by knockout, Lopez has just one stoppage since moving up to 140 pounds in 2022. Even if Romero gets more aggressive and desperate as the rounds progress, ‘The Takeover’ has not been much of a power threat as he has moved up in weight.
