Stephen Fulton Jr’s Road to WBO Gold

Emanuel Navarrete vacated the WBO title belt so he could move up in weight to compete. Fulton is the number one ranked contender in his division by the WBO. So his involvement in this fight was academic. He has already captured the IBO junior featherweight world title. Fulton Jr captured that strap in May of last year when he bested Paulus Ambunda via unanimous decision.

Fulton Jr’s last outing saw him capture the WBO intercontinental junior featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Arnold Khegai in January of this year. The next logical step up is to vie for the organization’s world championship.

Angelo Leo Path to August 1st

This fight is Leo’s first crack at a world championship and he is the number two ranked contender by the WBO. Having been a Floyd Mayweather Jr helmed prospective talent over the years, Leo has been primed for this moment for a while.

Angelo Leo has been getting groomed well by Mayweather Promotions since signing with them in 2017. He leveled up as a more serious pugilist in his last outing. Leo defeated Cesar Juarez in a bout that saw him score three knockdowns before the eventual eleventh round TKO victory. That prizefight was an IBF and WBO title eliminator which has lead Leo to this moment.

Fulton Jr has a strong jab and good distance control that could allow him to dictate the pace of this bout. Leo has been avidly studying tape on his opponent though and has two backup gameplans in the event that his primary strategy does not pan out. In fact, during a media event, Leo was talking about how Fulton Jr was not infallible and has shown instances of having pronounced holes in his game. He did not deflect from those claims and has talked about getting rocked in the ring but using that for long term growth as a pugilist.

This is a bigger step up in competition for Leo than for Fulton Jr. Both are top-notch fighters but Stephen Fulton Jr has functioned more within that rarified, world champion caliber tier of the sport. I ultimately think that the “quality of opposition edge” will favor Stephen Fulton Jr in this fight. I see the former defeating the latter via unanimous decision when Fulton Jr vs Leo goes down.

Pick: Stephen Fulton Jr (-265)
