Alberta online casinos

Since launching on July 13, we have the first Alberta online casino revenue data to look at.

This past weekend, the Alberta iGaming Corporation released the revenue information for the first three months of activity for regulated Alberta online casinos.

From July 13 through September, brought in a total of CA$122.1 million in revenue between online casinos and online sports betting. Of that total, $102 million came from slots, table games, and live dealer casino games.

Here’s a deeper dive into how Alberta online casinos fared in their first quarter.

Albert Online Casino Revenue Breakdown for Q3

Here’s a look at the data provided by the AiGC for its first three months of online casino activity. It should be noted that the AiGC differentiated casino revenue as “random number generator-based games such as slots, progressive jackpot slots, traditional table games, poker, and keno.” They then designate revenue for live casino as “real-time games hosted by a live dealer such as live slots and keno, traditional table games, and gameshow-style games.”

Below is how the casino revenue played out over the first three months.

Totals$2.28 billion$2.18 billion$95.5 million

Now, here’s how it looks between the two combined for total online casino revenue.

Takeaways from First Albert Online Casino Data

With three months of information, there’s a lot to analyze, but here’s some of the notable stats that stand out from the first Alberta iGaming report.

Wagers, Revenue Increase Each Month

It makes sense that the revenue and wagers jumped up significantly from July to August, given online gamine started in the middle of July.

But, the total casino wagers from August to September were up 17.6%, while total casino revenue was up 19.7%.

These numbers display a continued interest in iGaming, but also the growth of the industry as now over 50 different online casinos are available in the province. Look for wagers and revenue to continue a steady incline in Q4.

Live Casino Market Share

Alberta has done us the courtesy to break up the revenue information with live casino data separate from non-live games.

That shows us that in Q3, live casino games accounted for 11.1% of the total casino wagers, but just 6.5% of the revenue.

Alberta has a vast amount of live dealer casino games, so garnering over 10% of the wagers isn’t too surprising. Slot play usually dominates the market share of wagers, so a healthy live dealer contribution is a positive for these in-studio games.

Nearly 400,000 Active Player Accounts

Along with the revenue data, the AiGC noted that there are 388,585 active player accounts in the province for iGaming.

An active player account doesn’t represent unique players, as an individual can have accounts on multiple platforms. But, it means there are over 388,000 total accounts active in Alberta at the end of September.

With the $56.6 million in revenue generated in September through online casinos and online sports betting, it translates to $146 of average revenue per active account.

Online Sports Betting Draws $20 Million in Revenue

The online sports betting data was also provided in this initial report.

Here’s how each month looked for Alberta sports betting.

MonthSports Betting WagersSports Betting WinningsSports Betting Revenue
July (started July 13)$60.9 million$57.1 million$3.8 million
August$112.2 million$107.0 million$5.2 million
September$152.7 million$141.6 million$11.1 million
Totals$325.8 million$305.7 million$20.1 million

Just like the online casinos, both wagers and revenue increased each month for sports betting. Wagers jumped 84.2% from July to August and 36.1% from August to September. For revenue, it grew 36.8% from July to August, and 113.5% from August to September

Overall, the hold for Alberta online sportsbooks over the first three months was 6.2%.
