Friday’s college football schedule gives us an unbeaten ACC showdown and a Big Ten game with plenty to prove. Pittsburgh visits Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. ET, followed by Penn State at Northwestern at 8 p.m. ET. Those two games supply my three player props for October 2.
The most interesting decision is whether to trust recent offensive production against a stronger opponent. Pitt’s quarterback and Virginia Tech’s leading rusher have put up big numbers, but both now face a meaningful step up in competition.
Below are my favorite college football player props for Friday, with a closer look at the workload, matchup and line movement behind each selection.

Mason Heintschel Passing Yards Pick vs Virginia Tech
- Pick: Mason Heintschel over 248.5 passing yards (-115 at theScore Bet)
Mason Heintschel enters this matchup averaging 297.8 passing yards per game. Through four games, he has completed 88 of 130 passes for 1,191 yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception. His 403-yard, six-touchdown performance against Bucknell shows the upside, even if Friday’s assignment is considerably tougher.
Virginia Tech is scoring 43.3 points per game, giving Pitt a reason to keep its passing attack involved throughout the night. If the Hokies sustain that production, Heintschel should have opportunities to answer rather than simply protect a comfortable lead. That competitive game script is the main attraction here, especially with both teams entering unbeaten.
The passing line has climbed from 244.5 to 248.5, so we have lost four yards of value since the opener. Still, the current threshold sits almost 50 yards below his season average. I like the over, while recognizing that the Bucknell performance lifts that average and should not be treated as the standard against an ACC opponent. Jeffrey Overton Rushing Yards Pick vs Pittsburgh
- Pick: Jeffrey Overton over 78.5 rushing yards (-111 at BetMGM)
Jeffrey Overton has delivered 409 rushing yards on 60 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt and 102.3 per game. His latest outing was the breakout: 209 yards on 25 carries against Boston College. That workload is the strongest reason to consider another over, particularly with his line now below 80 yards.
Pitt presents a much stiffer challenge. The Panthers are allowing just 53.3 rushing yards per game, so this pick requires Overton to outperform what that defense has typically conceded to an entire team. Virginia Tech will need to keep giving him touches rather than expecting every carry to produce the same explosive results as last week.
The market has lowered his rushing line from 87.5 to 78.5. Those nine yards matter in a difficult matchup, and a similar workload would give him several ways to reach the number. I am backing his opportunity and recent efficiency, with Pitt’s run defense making this the most demanding matchup among the three selections. Rocco Becht Passing Yards Pick vs Northwestern
- Pick: Rocco Becht over 213.5 passing yards (-115 at bet365)
Rocco Becht gets a slightly lower target after his passing line moved from 215.5 to 213.5. Penn State’s offense is averaging 36.8 points and 427.2 total yards per game, giving the quarterback a productive overall setting. The over needs him to turn that team production into a more consistent individual passing performance.
Matt Campbell emphasized that need for consistency during his Tuesday press conference. Northwestern is allowing 18 points per game, so this is not a pick built on expecting easy touchdowns or a broken defense. Sustained drives and accurate passing will matter more than assuming Penn State can simply overwhelm the Wildcats.
At this number, a steady four-quarter effort can be enough without requiring a huge statistical night. The two-yard reduction from the opener is modest, but it gives us a slightly better entry point. I like Becht to respond in a competitive road game, provided Penn State maintains its passing volume rather than leaning almost entirely on the run.
