- Ohio State DE Chase Young will miss at least one game due to a possible NCAA violation
- Young leads the nation with 13.5 sacks and is the highest listed defensive player in the Heisman Trophy odds
- The odds did not move after news of his suspension leading to speculation the penalty will not keep him from missing the Penn State or Michigan games later in the season
Breathe easy Buckeyes fans, the Chase Young news may not be as bad as originally expected.
The best edge rusher in college football will not play Saturday against Maryland due to an NCAA violation from 2018. The reaction from the odds makers is telling here, as in there has been no reaction at all.

The Four-Team College Football Playoff odds are sitting exactly where they were prior to the announcement which tells you it’s not time to panic. Here’s what we know about the situation and why you shouldn’t hesitate to bet the Buckeyes at this number.

Chase Young Loan Breaks NCAA Rules
Young will miss Saturday’s contest against Maryland, a particularly stern punishment considering he’s from Hyattsville, Maryland. Concerns were raised regarding a loan he took back in 2018, one he explained on twitter Friday.

Anytime money, suspensions and the NCAA are discussed it can cause anxiety for the team and fan base involved. In this case, should the details Young is providing in his statement prove to be true, there isn’t much here. He’ll miss the Maryland game where the Buckeyes are currently listed as 43.5-point favorites and could possibly miss the next game against Rutgers. All expectations are however, that he’ll be back in the lineup for the Penn State game November 23rd.
More on Chase Young situation:
– Loan was not from Agent
– It was paid back before situation became public
– He was truthful from start
– With precedent I would expect somewhere between 1-2 game suspension…fact that it was not agent and loan was paid back will be key

Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt breaks it down perfectly. The loan was from a family friend, had already been paid back prior to the incident becoming public knowledge and he has been contrite throughout the process. All signs point to the NCAA sack leader being back on the field before too long.
Can Buckeyes Defense Hold Up Without Young?
There is good news on a couple of different fronts here. The first being, the competition the next two weeks is about as poor as you can get while playing Power 5 programs. Maryland has lost four straight games by a combined 113 points and earlier this season lost 59-0 to Penn State. Rutgers is even worse, with a 2-7 record and a loss by 41 points to, you guessed it, Maryland.
In non-Chase updates: Austin Mack and Teradja Mitchell are game-time decisions tomorrow.
Jonathon Cooper is also unavailable.

In the unlikely scenario Young is not back for the Penn State match up three weeks from now it still doesn’t mean doom and gloom for Ohio State. Cornerback Jeffrey Okudah is a potential top-10 pick in the draft and the front seven is loaded with players who will play on Sundays, including Zach Harrison who will slide into Young’s spot on the d-line.
Bet the Buckeyes Confidently
Ohio State is 7-0 ATS the last seven games and the fact that its National Championship odds did not budge with this news is all you need to know. If you liked them before, you should like them just as much now and if that’s the case I’d recommend betting them before they have any more chances to impress both Vegas and the College Football Playoff committee.
