  • 2019 LCK Spring Split starts January 16th in Seoul
  • Can Faker and SKT T1 return to their former glory?
  • Will Griffin be able to get it done this time around?

The LCK Spring Split is set to begin January 16th in Seoul, and is sure to showcase the best of the best when it comes to League of Legends. The Korean region has always been a powerhouse in the LoL scene, with all the other regions looking to Korea to see emerging trends.

With there being a few major roster changes this offseason, most notably to the three-time world champions SKT T1, this split should provide some interesting results. First lets take a look at what teams you should be expecting to reach the playoffs in the LCK.

Odds to Reach Playoffs in LCK Spring Split

Teams Odds
Griffin -30000
SK Telecom T1 -20000
Gen.G -275
KT Rolster -175
Afreeca Freecs -175
KINGZONE DragonX Even
Damwon Gaming Even
Hanwha Life Esports +400
Sandbox Gaming +1200
Jin Air Green Wings +1200

Who Can Crack the Top Five?

The LCK has a different playoff format than other regions that participate in professional League of Legends. The top five teams move on, with the number one team of the regular season getting a bye all the way to finals. Also the second and third place teams get a bye to the second the third round respectively.

There are some teams that should be considered a lock for playoffs, such as Griffin, SKT T1, KT Rolster, and Gen.G. The final spot up for grabs should create for some amazing competition, but I think it will be a battle of three teams, Afreeca Freecs, KINGZONE DragonX, and Damwon Gaming.

Both Afreeca and KINGZONE are teams that have seen success in the LCK in the past, finishing third and fourth in the 2018 Summer Split, and first and second in the 2018 Spring Split respectively. They both have the resume, but I think that Damwon Gaming is going to be the team that fills out that fifth and final playoff spot in the LCK Spring Split.

Though they are a promotion team, they showed great promise at the KeSPA Cup in December, beating SKT T1 2-1 in the playoffs only to lose to Griffin in the next round. Expect Damwon to make some waves in their first LCK Spring Split, and squeak into the playoff picture.

Picks: Griffin (-30000), SKT T1 (-20000), Gen.G (-275), KT Rolster (-175), Damwon Gaming (Even)

Who Will Get the Bye to Finals?

Last split saw a four-way tie at the top with KT Rolster, Griffin, KINGZONE, and Gen.G all finishing with 13-5 records. With it coming down to game difference, and head-to-head, KT Rolster took the top spot in Korea, and the bye to the finals.

This time around I think it is unlikely we see that happen, but there should be a bit of gridlock near the top of the table. Griffin is the consensus number one team in Korea, and has been for some time now. They choked in the last split losing to KT Rolster in the finals, then losing in round two of the regional finals to Gen.G.

After missing out on Worlds, Griffin, should come with a whole new level for fire in the 2019 LCK Spring Split. Lead by Tarzan, expect Griffin to come out of the regular season with the best record, and claim the ever sought after bye to the finals of playoffs.

Pick: Griffin (+175)

Who Will Be Joining Griffin in the Finals?

Like I stated previously, the winner of the LCK Spring Split gets a bye right into the finals, and I predict Griffin to snag the first spot. So the question is who will be facing off against them come time for the Finals.

SKT T1 comes in with the second best odds to reach the finals, and I believe they are going to be the ones to challenge Griffin in the finals. Lead by the greatest League of Legends player of all-time, Faker, the new look SKT looks primed to get back to their former glory.

Struggling last season, SKT was only able to land in fourth during the 2018 Spring Split, and finished seventh in the Summer Split. With the right pieces surrounding Faker, they should be able to get back to their dominant selves, and it looks like they were able to add those pieces in the offseason.

SKT T1 should not be taken lightly this upcoming split regardless of their last season.

SKT has won three world championships, something that no other team has done. They may come out slow to start the split as they are a totally new team, but come time for playoffs expect them to make a serious run. SKT T1 should not be taken lightly this upcoming split regardless of their last season, they should prove once again why they are widely considered the best team in League of Legends.

Picks: Griffin (-225), SK Telecom T1 (-175)

Will Faker Once Again Reign Supreme Over the LCK?

The Unkillable Demon King, aka Faker, aka Lee Sang-hyeok, looks for redemption after a disappointing 2018 season, and it all starts with the LCK Spring Split. Though Griffin is the favorite to come out on top in the first split of 2019, I believe that SKT T1 will be the last team standing.

Faker thrives on the biggest stages, and his desire to win coming off of the worst year of his career should push him into another dimension. With the right players around him, it’s hard to bet against the GOAT of League of Legends.

Faker thrives on the biggest stages, and his desire to win coming off of the worst year of his career should push him into another dimension.

I believe that SKT went out and got the right players this offseason, picking up an entirely new roster of Khan, Haru, Teddy, and Mata. They may start out slowly out of the gate, but when all is said and done, expect SKT Telecom T1 to once again take their seat on the throne of the LCK.

Pick: SKT Telecom T1 (+250)
