- The Sanderson Farms Championship tees off Thursday, September 19th
- This tournament has been a breeding ground for first-time PGA Tour winners
- We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious
Following his impressive six-stroke victory for his first PGA Tour title, 20-year-old Joaquin Niemann heads to the Sanderson Farms Championship as the betting favorite to earn victories in back-to-back weeks amid a field that is devoid of star power.
This tournament has proven to be a phenomenal place for players to pick up their maiden victory on tour as the last five winners have made this event their breakthrough into the winners circle on the PGA Tour.

Sungjae Im the Best Option of the Winless Golfers
The only rookie to make the finale of the FedEx Cup playoffs, Sungjae Im has a complete game that served him well in his first year, but didn’t result in a victory.
The 21-year-old phenom has all the tools and amazing stamina, having played in a whopping 35 events, recording seven top ten finishes. I was high on him at last week’s Greenbrier Classic but he wasn’t able to go low on Sunday to put any pressure on Niemann in his quest for victory #1.

It’s hard to call the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year overdue to win, but that’s exactly the case. He’s far too good to not find the winner’s circle eventually. He stands a great chance against a diluted field this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Last Five Sanderson Farms Championship Winners
Year | Winner |
---|---|
2018 | Cameron Champ |
2017 | Ryan Armour |
2016 | Cody Gribble |
2015 | Peter Malnati |
2014 | Nick Taylor |
Sam Burns Another Intriguing Option
The recent trend on tour has been young upstarts breaking through with 20-year-old Matthew Wolff taking the 3M Open, 22-year-old Collin Morikawa emerging victorious at the Barracuda Championship, and then last week, Niemann taking the Greenbrier Classic.
Sam Burns (23) fits the bill as an uber-talented youngster who could take home his first title.

His best result on the PGA Tour to date came at this very tournament last year, when he finished tied for third. Burns is back healthy following a freak ankle injury that caused him to miss two months and he’s destined to win sometime soon. You can get him at fantastic +6600 odds.
2019 Sanderson Farms Championship Best Value Picks
- Scottie Scheffler (+2500): Co-leader after 36 holes last week at the Greenbrier before winding up T-7th. Leading money winner from the Korn Ferry Tour last season, posting two victories and two second place showings.
- Luke List (+5000): Ridiculous that he hasn’t won yet, a playoff loss to Justin Thomas at the 2018 Honda Classic his closest call. Also came very close at this very course in 2016, finishing in a tie for second.
- Cameron Tringale (+7500): Another surprising winless golfer, Tringale held the 54-hole co-lead at the John Deere Classic in July before a tough Sunday. Solid all-around game should eventually land him in the winners circle.
