After three straight tournaments that saw multiple courses being used, the PGA Tour heads to TPC Scottsdale in Arizona, where just one track will be played on all four days. The WM Phoenix Open is legendary for the raucous atmosphere, in particular the par three, 16th hole that sees fans cheering shots that hit the green and booing ones that miss.

Six top-ten golfers and 15 of the top-20 in the world are competing, making this an elite field, including Jon Rahm, who went to school at Arizona State. He’s joined by Justin Thomas and reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, who has won this event twice.

The recent list of champions is a who’s who of players, with the last seven winners also capturing a major championship or the Players Championship. Brooks Koepka, who, like Matsuyama, has taken two trophies at this track, returns as defending champion.

Patrick Cantlay has longer odds than the top-three players on the board. He was the favorite to win last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but he fell off down the stretch to finish in a tie for fourth.

Patrick Cantlay Riding a Hot Hand

When you’re the fourth player in the world, like Patrick Cantlay is, merely recording top ten’s without victories can seem like a bitter disappointment. Such is the case for Cantlay, who won the final two events last season to be crowned FedEx Cup champion.

He’s had a very solid start to the year, picking up a fourth place at the Sentry TOC, ninth at the American Express, and T-4th at last weekend’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The last two he was in contention for the title before fading late.

Unsurprisingly, his strokes gained stats in the last 24 rounds on tour have been really strong, despite not lifting a trophy in 2022.

For a player that is in fine form, and has racked up five straight top-10’s, with those two victories to end 2021, you’re getting him at +1600, which is longer odds than the top-three players on the board.

2022 WM Phoenix Open Best Value Picks

  1. Webb Simpson (+3500): Webb Simpson has excelled at this golf course, winning the tournament in 2020 and he was runner-up in 2017 when he dropped a playoff to Hideki Matsuyama. He’s also posted three other career top-10’s at the WM Open. In the last 24 rounds at this championship, Simpson is third in total strokes gained.
  2. Bubba Watson (+4000): For a player who in the past has said he hates this track, you sure wouldn’t know it by Bubba Watson’s track record. He’s posted five career top five finishes, including a pair of runner-ups in 2014 and 2015. He was T-3rd in 2020 and T-4th the year before that, and in the last twelve rounds at this venue, he’s first in SG: tee-to-green. Just last weekend he ended up in second position at the Saudi International to Harold Varner III.
  3. Pat Perez (+10000): A player to potentially dive into for a top-five or top-ten bet is Pat Perez. In the last two weeks, he’s been very solid, tying for sixth at Torrey Pines then he was T-9th at Pebble Beach. In those two tourneys, the three-time winner has gained over 20 total strokes on his competitors.
