When it comes to the world of golf, the PGA Tour owned August. September however, has a chance to be dominated by LIV Golf.

The Saudi-backed Tour has a pair of marquee events happening in the first three weeks of the month, starting Friday near Boston. The International Golf Club in Bolton, Mass will play host to LIV Golf’s fourth tournament, and the field got a whole lot stronger on Tuesday.

Reigning British Open and Players champion Cam Smith officially declared his allegiance to LIV Golf, as did a pair of other former PGA Tour winners in Joaquin Niemann and Marc Leishman. Veterans Harold Varner III and Cameron Tringale also jumped ship, making this week’s event can’t very intriguing.

The ink was still dry on Smith’s new contract when oddsmakers established him as the favorite for this week’s tournament. The world number two will be looking to buck the trend of longshot veteran winners, as each of the first three champions of LIV Golf so far have been 34 years of age or older and priced well down the odds board.

That’s not to say Smith couldn’t show up to The International and win, but there’s absolutely value on his odds at +550. The same can be said for Dustin Johnson who is priced right behind him, but that’s not the case a little further down the board.

Bet on Bryson

Let’s start with Bryson DeChambeau. 12 of the past 24 Major Championships have been won by players in this field, including Bryson’s victory at the 2020 U.S. Open.

The International Golf Club is nothing like his victory at Winged Foot nearly two years ago, however it is a course that demands a lot of strategy. It’s a Tom Fazio design that emphasizes off the tee placement, and features large undulated greens and wasteland bunkers everywhere.

2022 LIV Golf Champions

Event Winner
London Charl Schwartzel
Portland Branden Grace
Bedminster Henrik Stenson

No player in the world is more meticulous when it comes to preparation for a new course than DeChambeau, and it’s a flat out mistake by oddsmakers that he’s priced so long. He’s the former world number four, and is capable of dominating golf course like few players in the world – see his victory last year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational if you need more proof.

Bryson played exceptionally well at the British Open, finishing eighth, and was within striking distance of the lead in his LIV Golf debut in Portland before a disappointing Sunday.

He belongs in a tier just outside of Smith and DJ, and until he’s properly priced he’ll remain worthy of our outright action.

Pick: Bryson DeChambeau to Win (+2000)

2022 LIV Golf Invitational Boston Best Value Picks

  1. Matthew Wolff (+2800): Another glaring value on the oddsboard, Wolff enters this week with an eighth and second place result in two LIV Golf starts. Last time out at Bedminster, he led the field in putting while ranking second in driving distance and top-10 in greens in regulation.
  2. Lee Westwood (+5500): If there’s one wily veteran that can carry on the trend of older longshots winning on the LIV Tour it’s Westwood. The 49-year-old has been trending in the right direction, finishing 29th, 16th and ninth in his most recent LIV Golf start. Westwood led the field at Bedminster in both driving accuracy and greens in regulation but finished just 11th in total birdies. If he keeps giving himself quality looks, the birdies should fall at a stronger rate this week which will make him a serious contender.
