Rockies Aim to Reverse Road Woes in Visit to Arizona

The Colorado Rockies will be aiming to extend their longest win streak since early June when they kick off a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Rockies are coming off a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins, capped by a narrow 7-6 victory on Sunday, extending their current win streak to four games as they embark on a seven-game road trip.

The Rockies’ bats have come to life during the club’s current surge, averaging seven runs per game. However, Colorado has regularly struggled on the road, racking up a dismal 6-19 record over the club’s past 25 contests away from Coors Field. That run includes coming out on the wrong end of a three-game sweep in their last visit to Arizona just before the MLB All-Star Break, which halted a 9-1 run in games at Chase Field.

The club also dropped two of three to the Diamondbacks on home turf last week and has surrendered 6.66 runs per game during their 1-5 run against Arizona.

The Diamondbacks will be looking to build on the momentum gained from Sunday’s decisive 6-1 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants as they prepare to host the division rival Rockies. Arizona had dropped six of eight prior to Sunday’s win, with their two victories during that stretch coming against the Rockies.

The club has produced mixed results at home since entering the All-Star Break on a 6-1 run, going 8-9 in 17 outings. The Diamondbacks have risen to the occasion against stiff competition, posting wins in three of their past four home series, including impressive performances against Philadelphia and Washington.

However, the club will need better performances out of scheduled starters Alex Young and Mike Leake, who were both roughed up in losing efforts against the Giants late last week.

Pick: Rockies (+145)

Milwaukee Brewers +130

Cardinals Eye Top Spot in NL Central Ahead of Visit from Brewers

The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to seize sole possession of first place in the tightly contested NL Central, when they host the division rival Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series that gets underway on Monday night.

The Cardinals have won seven of nine to pull into a virtual tie with the Chicago Cubs atop the NL Central standings, two games up on third-place Milwaukee, and have been steady producers on home turf, going 10-4 in their past 14 contests.

The Cardinals have played stingy ball during their current home surge, limiting opponents to two or fewer runs in eight of 14 contests, including five of their past six. Hurlers Michael Wacha and Adam Wainwright, who are expected to get the call on Tuesday and Wednesday, have been red-hot in recent home starts.

Wacha has allowed just two earned runs 10.2 innings over his past two home starts, while Wainwright has given up one or fewer earned runs in seven of 11 home starts this season.

The Brewers travel to St. Louis after opening a six-game road trip by dropping two of three in Washington this past weekend. Milwaukee has now dropped four of six overall, and apart from recent road series wins in Pittsburgh and Arizona, the club has struggled badly on the road, going 11-18 in their past 29 contests away from Miller Park, and 2-7 in their past nine road series.

Complicating matters is the huge run totals that the Brewers surrendered in Washington, allowing 30 total runs in their past two outings, capped by Sunday’s 16-8 loss to the Nationals.

Now surprisingly, Brewers starters have struggled during the club’s current swoon, earning just one winning decision in the club’s past ten outings. Milwaukee has also dropped four straight to the Cardinals, including a three-game sweep in St. Louis back in April that halted the Brewers’ 14-6 run at Busch Stadium.

Pick: Cardinals (-150)
