31. That’s the number of wins the Athletics (13-50, 6-26 away) are on pace for this season. It would be the fewest victories in MLB history over a full 162 game schedule, and online sportsbooks are expecting yet another defeat for Oakland on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates (33-28, 16-14 home) have been pegged as the home chalk in the MLB odds for good reason. They currently occupy top spot in the NL Central, and have won six of their past seven contests.

Oakland vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers
Despite their standing atop the division, the Pirates are getting zero love in the World Series odds. They currently boast a +20000 price tag to win it all, which is shorter than only six other teams.
They’ll give the ball to Roansy Contreras on Wednesday, as he looks to bounce back from a dreadful outing. Contreras surrendered seven hits and five runs to the struggling Cardinals on Friday, and was taken deep twice.
Control and the long ball have been the big reasons for his struggles lately, as he’s winless in his past six starts. He’s coughed up seven home runs during that stretch, while averaging a base on balls nearly every two innings.
Fortunately for him, the Oakland regulars in MLB starting lineups represent one of the most favorable matchups a pitcher can have – more on that later.
Harris vs Contreras Stats
The A’s will counter with rookie Hogan Harris. On the surface, his numbers look terrible, but that’s being heavily influenced by one bad outing. Harris yielded six hits, six runs and five walks in just one-third of an inning back in April in his MLB debut. He was sent back down to the minors afterwards, and has looked like a different pitcher since he’s returned.

In 10 innings of relief work since being recalled, split over two outings, he’s allowed only two runs while striking out 10. He held the mighty Astros to a single hit over 5 innings two weeks ago, and then last week limited the Marlins to two runs and five hits over 5 innings.
He’s posted a 3.77 ERA in eight starts for AAA Las Vegas, but will have his hands full with the Pirates lineup. Pittsburgh is slashing .288/.364/.419 over the last week, averaging five runs per game.
Athletics vs Pirates Predictions
That’s helped Pittsburgh outscore the opposition 29-15 during their last six games ahead of Tuesday night’s tilt. They don’t have a single dominant hitter in their lineup, but it’s still well balanced unit that sees contributions come from everywhere.
Ke’Bryan Hayes has been leading the charge lately, slashing .417/.417/.792 over the past week. That includes a pair of home runs over his past four starts, and a six-game hitting streak.

Oakland on the other hand, ranks dead last in nearly every offensive category. No team scores fewer runs per game, or owns a lower batting average, slugging percentage or OPS. Prior to Tuesday’s 11 run outburst, they’d scored three runs or less in 18 of their past 22 contests.

|June 6||Athletics||Pirates||OAK, 11-2|

They’re a league worst 6-26 as visitors this season, posting truly dismal numbers. They’re averaging 3.5 runs per game as visitors, while batting .229 with a .365 slugging percentage.
Oakland is also incredibly prone to striking out, which should boost Contreras’ K ceiling. The Pirates right-hander has posted underwhelming strike out numbers to date, but did whiff six Cardinals batters last time out. Contreras has gone over 4.5 K’s four times this season, while the A’s have fanned at a 29% clip against righties in 2023.
