After a hard fought three-game series versus the defending champs, the St. Louis Cardinals (73-54, 32-32 away) have been gifted the softest schedule imaginable over the next two weeks. The Cardinals will face the Reds, Cubs, Nationals and Pirates over the next 14 days, four of the five worst teams in the NL.

The stretch begins Monday night in Cincinnati against the Reds (50-76, 26-36 home), and oddsmakers aren’t expecting a particularly close matchup.

St. Louis vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

St. Louis, a top-eight World Series odds contender, will give the ball to Miles Mikolas. The 34-year-old was rocked by the Cubs in his last start, something that’s been happening a little too frequently for Cards fans lately.

Mikolas coughed up six hits and five runs over 6.2 innings, en route to a 7-1 defeat. It was the third time in his past six starts that he’s allowed at least five runs, one of which came against Cincinnati.

The last time he faced the Reds, Mikolas was chased after surrendering seven hits and six runs over just 5 innings. He took the loss in that outing as well, one of his 10 so far this season.

He’s 1-1 against Cincinnati in 2022, holding them to three hits and one run over 7 innings in his only other meeting against them.

Mikolas vs Anderson (2021) Stats

Miles Mikolas
VS
Chase Anderson
10-10 Record 2-4
3.35 ERA 6.75
1.02 WHIP 1.48
.227 OBA .268
4.2 SO/W Ratio 1.8

Cincinnati will counter with Chase Anderson. The righty has been toiling in the minor this season with both the Tigers and Rays organizations, and was just recently signed by the Reds. He’s very familiar with the National League having spend seven seasons with the Diamondbacks, Brewers and Phillies, but his results over the past two years were not encouraging.

Anderson posted a 7.22 ERA in 10 appearances in 2020, and a 6.75 ERA in 14 appearances last season. He had a 4.50 ERA in 80 minor league innings this season and the fact that no contending team was interested in his services tells you all you need to know about his prospects against the mighty St. Louis bats.

Cardinals vs Reds Betting Analysis

Only the Braves and Dodgers have scored more runs this season than the Cardinals, and St. Louis entered play on Sunday night winners of 11 of their past 14 games.

They’d scored 18 runs in their past three outings, and welcomed back slugger Nolan Arenado from paternity leave on Saturday. The number two man in the NL MVP odds, behind teammate Paul Goldschmidt, returned in style with a 4-for-4 performance. He slugged his 27th home run along the way, while Goldschmidt went deep twice two games earlier.

The duo rank first and second in the NL in WAR, while the Cards are a top-four lineup in baseball in average, slugging and OPS.

Cincinnati on the other hand, is just playing out the string. The Reds were swept the Phillies in a four-game set earlier this week, and are 1-9 in their last 10 meetings this month versus playoff calibre competition. They’ve been outscored 34 during that stretch and will be hard pressed to keep pace with St. Louis given the Cards favorable matchup against Anderson.

Cardinals vs Reds Pick

Expect St. Louis to jump all over Anderson early. Only four teams in MLB average more runs than the Cards during the first 5 innings, while Cincinnati ranks in the bottom-third of the league in that category. Anderson struggled to keep runs off the board against minor league competition. A date with St. Louis is going to be a rude introduction back to the Big Leagues.

Once Anderson is done for the night don’t expect the bleeding to stop. The Reds bullpen ranks last in baseball in ERA, 29th in home run rate allowed, and bottom-10 in strand rate.

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals First 5 Innings -0.5 (-140)
