The New York Mets are off to a hot start to the season. They won’t get a better chance to stack up wins when they open up their home schedule against the lowly Arizona Diamondbacks in a 3-game set starting Friday.
After dropping four of their first five to kick off the campaign, Arizona salvaged a win in the final of their six-game homestand, going to extras to dump in the Astros.
New York, meanwhile, took two of three from the Phillies, getting their second straight W in a 9-6 triumph. They started the year strong taking three of four from the Nationals.

Bassitt is coming off a career year with the Oakland A’s a season ago, where he set career highs in starts (27), wins (12-4) and innings pitched (157.1). He also held batters to a personal-best .218 average, while striking out 159 batters — 18 better than his previous best.

The Diamondbacks are turning to 29-year-old Zach Davies, who got a no-decision in his first start of the year against the Padres, a game Arizona lost 5-2.
Davies went five innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, striking out two while walking three batters.

Save for a stint with the Padres in 2020, Davies has spent the majority of his career in the NL Central, starting the first five years with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Last season was a rough one for him with the Chicago Cubs. Davies finished 6-12 on a career-worst 5.78 ERA. Control was an issue for him, as he gave up 75 walks and surrendered a .281 batting average, also the worst marks of his career.

The Mets are just one of three teams that have a projected MLB win totals higher than 90 in the National League, joining the Braves and the Dodgers.
However, the Mets and unmet expectations have gone hand-in-hand for some time, which is likely why they’re pegged with only the 8th-best World Series odds.

Still, there’s some good stuff going on here early. New York is batting .255 as a team, which ranks fifth in MLB and their .365 on-base percentage is second only to the Cleveland Guardians.
Last time out against the Phillies, Pete Alonso waved a big stick, hitting a homerun, adding two doubles and totaling five RBI’s in a 9-6 win.

Starling Marte might be one to watch Friday. He is hitting 10-for-28 against Davies, which includes a couple of doubles and three walks. Eduardo Escobar is the only other Met that’s had more than six at-bats against the Arizona righty. He’s only gone 3-for-14 against him, but he does have a home run.
While the Mets have jumped out of the gate strong offensively, the Diamondbacks are on the direct opposite end of the spectrum. They’ve scored just 15 runs in six games, with only the Baltimore Orioles more offensively inept.
They are dead last with a .140 team batting average, and AZ is a bottom-6 team in on-base percentage, a lowly .286 clip.

Arizona did hang tough last game though. After Houston broke a 1-1 tie in the 10th to take the lead, the D’backs responded with two rns in the home half to pull out the win. Ketel Marte went 1-for-3 and his sacrifice fly delivered the walk-off heroics.
Rookie Seth Beer has been key in both wins to start the year. He had an RBI single to tie the game against the Astros, and added a 3-run walk-off homer to win their opener.
