The Boston Red Sox will try to stay hot when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays at 4:10 p.m. ET Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

The Red Sox (67-68, 32-33 road) come into Labor Day with a five-game winning streak, including beating the Texas Rangers 5-2 on Sunday in Boston. The Rays (74-58, 44-24 home) lost to the New York Yankees 2-1 on Sunday at home to end their three-game win streak.

The Rays are one game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second of three American League wild cards and in second place in the AL East, five games behind the Yankees.

Red Sox vs Rays Probable Pitchers

Michael Wacha (10-1, 2.56) is scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox and Luis Patino (1-1, 3.95) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start for the Rays. Both will be pitching on four days of rest.

Wacha is coming off an August in which he won all four starts with a 2.19 ERA. He is also 7-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his last nine outings.

Wacha beat the Minnesota Twins in his previous start last Wednesday at Minneapolis. He went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking one.

In five career starts against the Rays, Wacha is 2-3 with a 6.75 ERA. The former Ray has a 3-2 record at Tropicana Field with a 4.52 ERA in 15 games (11 starts).

Wacha is a perfect 5-0 on the road with a 3.26 ERA this season in nine starts. He has not allowed a run during the day in two starts and 10.2 innings while going 1-0. The Red Sox are 13-4 when Wacha takes the hill.

Patino’s last appearance with Durham was last Wednesday when he started and won against Charlotte. In 5.2 innings, he allowed three runs and four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

In his last major league outing, Patino pitched 5.2 scoreless innings Aug. 18 to beat the visiting Kansas City Royals. He allowed four hits and two walks and struck out four.

Patino is 1-1 with a 4.40 ERA against the Red Sox in four games (two starts) during his career.

In three starts at The Trop this year, Patino has a 1-1 record and 2.79 ERA. This will be his first appearance in a day game in the majors in 2022. The Rays have split his four starts.

Trevor Story hit a three-run home run Sunday to power the Red Sox over the Rangers and seal a four-game series sweep.

Xander Bogaerts had his eighth straight multi-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. The club record is nine.

Story also had three hits for Boston. Alex Verdugo and Rob Refsnyder added two each.

First baseman Triston Casas made his major league debut, going 1 for 4 after being called up from Triple-A Worcester.

Francisco Mejia hit a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning to draw the Rays within 2-1 of the Yankees on Sunday but Yandy Diaz struck out looking with runners on second and third base to end the game.

Diaz and Peralta each had two hits for the Rays.

The Rays lead the season series 9-4, including winning six of seven at The Trop. Diaz has worn out the Boston pitching staff, hitting .444 (20 for 45) with six doubles and two home runs. Bogaerts is 16 for 45 (.356) with four doubles and two homers against the Rays.

The Rays are 40-25 against the Red Sox since 2019. However, Boston beat Tampa Bay in four games last year in an American League Division Series.
