The Boston Red Sox travel to the Bronx to open the 2026 American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday at 8:00 PM ET, broadcast nationally on NBC/Peacock.
Boston earned its postseason berth with an 87-75 regular-season record, while New York secured home-field advantage with a 93-68 campaign. The historic AL East rivals clash in the playoffs after a tightly contested 13-game regular-season series in which the Yankees narrowly edged the Red Sox, 7-6.
The biggest question mark hanging over this game is the availability of Aaron Judge. The Yankees slugger has been on the 10-day injured list since September 17 with a right calf strain. His estimated return date has already passed (September 27), but as of this writing, it remains unclear whether Judge will be activated for the Wild Card roster. New York is not expected to announce its official postseason roster until early Tuesday morning, so all projections below should be weighed with the understanding that Judge’s presence – or absence – could shift the odds.
New York hands the ball to ace Cam Schlittler (14-6, 1.95 ERA) looking to defend home turf as betting favorites (-153) in the MLB odds, while rookie standout Payton Tolle (9-6, 3.03 ERA) takes the mound for the underdog Red Sox (+129). Below, I break down this clash from all angles, so keep reading for my Red Sox vs Yankees picks and best bets for Game 1.
Red Sox vs Yankees Picks and Best Bets for Game 1
- Moneyline: Yankees (60¢ via Kalshi)
- Total: Under 6.5 Runs (52¢ via Kalshi)
- Player Prop: Ceddanne Rafaela 1+ Hits (61¢ via Kalshi)
When evaluating the betting angles for this matchup of World Series odds contenders, the underlying statistics and pitching matchups point to a very distinct game script. Starting with the moneyline and total predictions, the starting pitching dictates a low-scoring affair. Schlittler vs Tolle Stats
Schlittler has been exceptional for the Yankees, posting a 1.95 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, and an elite 11.11 strikeouts per nine innings across 33 regular-season starts, finishing the year as the presumptive winner in the AL Cy Young odds.
He has completely stifled Boston’s bats this year, logging a dominant 0.74 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts in 24.1 innings across four outings against them. On the other side, Payton Tolle has been just as formidable in this matchup, recording a 0.69 ERA and holding New York to a minuscule .093 batting average with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings.
Tolle also dials in on the road, where he owns a 2.50 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Given how both arms suppress hard contact and generate swings and misses, the Under 6.5 is my most logical pick for the game total.
For the outright winner, New York is my moneyline pick, backed by Schlittler’s mound presence and home-field dominance. The Yankees went 21-12 straight-up in Schlittler’s starts this season and captured four of six meetings against Boston at Yankee Stadium, including a 1-0 Schlittler gem in late August. Backed by a bullpen that will operate with short leashes in Game 1, New York holds the decisive edge on home turf.
Red Sox Batters vs Schlittler
Yankees Batters vs Tolle
I am heavily factoring the MLB batter vs pitcher stats data into my projections. Ceddanne Rafaela has navigated Schlittler the best, recording four hits across a team-high 14 at-bats (.285 AVG). Caleb Durbin is the sole batter in either lineup to take the opposing starter deep.
Conversely, Willson Contreras has struggled heavily against Schlittler, striking out five times while managing just one hit over 12 at-bats. Meanwhile, New York has very limited career exposure to Tolle, minimizing the sample size for batter props on the home side.
Boston vs New York Odds for Game 1
Odds as of September 28 at Kalshi. Grab the Kalshi Promo Code for a bonus to use on Game 1 of this series.
The market consensus on Kalshi reflects New York as the clear favorite to defend their home turf. New York is favored to win outright, carrying a 60¢ price tag (-150), while Boston sits at 41¢ (+144). The runline market shows bettors can get 38¢ (+163) for a New York victory by 1.5 runs or more.
In the MLB public betting splits, the public and the money are in absolute agreement on the outright winner. New York is commanding 85.2% of the betting tickets and an overwhelming 98.6% of the financial stake. There is no sharp versus public divide to exploit here on the moneyline.
The most glaring discrepancy between the market consensus and my projections occurs in the game total. Bettors are heavily backing a high-scoring affair, with the Over attracting 90.9% of the tickets and 91.9% of the money.
This heavy public backing of the Over directly opposes my official game prediction. Both Schlittler and Tolle possess elite swing-and-miss stuff, pointing toward a low-scoring duel. Furthermore, the public’s aggressive stance ignores the historically dominant Under trends for both teams.
