Reds vs Nationals Probable Pitchers

The Reds plan to call up Brett Kennedy from Triple-A Louisville to make his first major-league start of the season. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (5-9, 4.84) is scheduled to start for the Nationals.

Both will be pitching on five days of rest.

Kennedy has not pitched in the major leagues since 2018 when he broke in with the San Diego Padres and had a 1-2 record and 6.75 ERA in six starts.

In eight starts with Louisville, Kennedy is 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA. He had a no-decision in his last start last Wednesday against Indianapolis when he was touched for six runs (five earned) and eight hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Kennedy began the season with independent Long Island and went 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA over three starts.

Corbin ended his four-start losing streak in impressive fashion by pitching seven shutout innings to beat the Mariners last Wednesday in Seattle. He allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked none.

Corbin is 5-4 with a 3.87 ERA against the Reds in 13 career games (12 starts).

The Nationals are 8-9 when Corbin pitches this season, and he has turned in nine quality starts. He is 2-5 with a 4.38 ERA in nine starts at Nationals Park and 3-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 starts during the day.

Jeimer Candelario homered for the Nationals. Lane Thomas and Corey Dickerson had two hits each.

The Nationals placed rookie right-handed reliever Thaddeus Ward (right shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day injured list before the game to clear a roster spot for Corbin, who was activated from the bereavement list.

Corbin pitched great his last time out but it’s hard to ignore his losses in each of his previous four stars. Time to go with the hot team here against a foe that struggles at home.
