New York vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

The Yankees, who enter play as a top-five World Series odds contender, will give the ball to Luis Severino. The 29-year-old will make his season debut, after suffering a lat strain in Spring Training.

Injuries have derailed the right-hander over the last handful of seasons, as he’s made just 26 starts in the past four years. His last full season was all the way back in 2018, when he posted a 19-8 record and drew consideration in the AL Cy Young odds.

Severino pitched very well in limited action in 2022, posting a 7-3 record with a tidy 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. He fanned 112 batters over 102 innings, allowing three runs or less in 15 of 19 outings.

He’s made two rehab starts this month, maxing out at 58 pitches in his latest outing. He’ll likely be a pitch count on Sunday, which means Cincy’s regulars in the MLB starting lineups should see plenty of New York’s top-two bullpen. Yankee relievers own a 3.04 ERA over 180.2 innings, and a league-best 79.6% strand rate.

Severino (2022) vs Greene Stats

Luis Severino
VS
Hunter Greene
7-3 Record 0-3
3.18 ERA 4.60
1.00 WHIP 1.58
.196 OBA .287
3.7 SO/W Ratio 3.5

The Reds meanwhile, will counter with Hunter Greene. The sophomore has produced phenomenal strikeout numbers this season but has struggled to keep runners off base. Opposing batters are slashing .287/.359/.483 off him so far, which overshadows his 12.3 K/9 rate.

Last time out, he surrendered a season-high six runs over just 4 innings in Colorado, which continued his May struggles. Greene has allowed 13 runs and five homers over 15 innings in three starts this month, posting a 7.80 ERA.

Yankees vs Reds Predictions

Given his struggles, Green is catching the Yankees at precisely the wrong time. New York is playing its best baseball of the season at the moment, winning five of six and 10 of its last 13 overall. With Saturday’s victory they improved to eight games above .500 for the first time this year, and have scored at least six runs 11 times in their last 13 outings.

Aaron Judge led the charge on Saturday versus Cincy with four hits, continuing his torrid run since returning from injury. Judge is batting .378 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and a 1.402 OPS in his last 11 starts. He leads the Yanks with 13 dingers and is a top-three contender in the AL MVP odds.

Also tearing the cover off the ball for New York at the moment is Anthony Rizzo. The Yankees slugger belted his 11th home run on Saturday to put the game away, giving him back-to-back multi-hit games versus the Reds. He’s batting .333 so far in May, with six homers and 15 RBI.

Yankees vs Reds 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
May 20 Yankees Reds NYY, 7-4
May 19 Yankees Reds NYY, 6-2

As for the Reds, their underwhelming season has now seen them drop five of six. They’ve been outscored 24-12 in the last three games alone, and boast one of the worst starting rotations in baseball. Cincy starters have combined to produce a 6.13 ERA so far this season, which is worse than everyone else in MLB except Oakland.

Offensively, they rank below league average in nearly every key category, including 27th in slugging. No Reds player has hit more than five home runs all season, while TJ Friedl is the only player with a WAR above 0.9, and he’s on the injured list.

Picks: New York Yankees Moneyline (-150), Anthony Rizzo 2+ Hits (+220)
