It’s a battle at the top of the AL East, as the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays host the second-place New York Yankees in a crucial 4-game set starting this evening.
New York starts the day four games back of the Rays, and they have struggled against them this year, having lost four of five matchups this season.
That’s part of the reason they find themselves road dogs in the MLB odds, even with a favorable pitching matchup.
First pitch goes this evening at 6:40pm ET from Tropicana Field in Tampa, with MLB TV providing the broadcast coverage.
Yankees vs Rays Odds
The graphic above shows the best available odds, which are subject to change. Be sure to use the BetMGM promo code to bet on Yankees vs Rays or any other MLB game. And don’t forget to check batter vs pitcher stats for this matchup for another betting edge.
The Rays come into this one as the betting favorite on the moneyline, getting -115 odds at bet365. Taking New York to win outright comes with +100 odds at DraftKings.
Both teams are being given 1.5 runs on the spread, and neither offer enticing odds. The Rays are getting -194 odds to cover at FanDuel, with New York getting -220 odds at bet365.
The total checks in at 7.5 runs. While the Under has hit in each of the last two meetings, the Over is 6-3-1 in the last 10 matchups.
Yankees vs Rays Expert Picks
Cam Schlittler 7+ Strikeouts (45¢ on Kalshi)
Getting a 45¢ price (implied +122) on Schlittler to hit seven strikeouts is incredibly enticing. He generates whiffs at a high level (10.64 K/9) and consistently pitches deep enough to clear this threshold.
Under 7.5 Runs (53¢ on Kalshi)
The Under is also supported by the same starting-pitching edge, plus New York’s depleted lineup. With Judge and Stanton unavailable, the Yankees may struggle to create crooked innings, which keeps the game total on the lower end.
NY Yankees vs TB Rays Prediction
- Best Bet: Yankees ML (+100 at DraftKings)
Tampa Bay enters carrying momentum from a decisive 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Conversely, New York looks to rebound after a tight 5-4 defeat to the Boston Red Sox where its bats went quiet.
With the home side favored and New York desperate to course-correct, this AL East opener carries substantial weight for the divisional standings.
The MLB probable pitchers matchup heavily dictates my approach for this divisional showdown. New York is sending Cam Schlittler to the mound. Over 104.0 innings, Schlittler boasts an elite 2.08 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. He strikes out batters at a prolific 10.64 K/9 rate.
Tampa Bay counters with Griffin Jax, who carries a 2.65 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP across 60.0 innings. Underneath the surface, Jax holds a 4.61 FIP. This indicates he has benefited from favorable sequencing and strong defense, making him a candidate for negative regression.
New York currently hits the ball with authority on the road, registering an 89.4 mph average exit velocity. However, that contact has not translated to consistency, as they sit 22nd in away batting average (.231).
Meanwhile, the Rays leverage their home turf efficiently, boasting the league’s third-best home batting average (.271) despite an anemic 86.6 mph home exit velocity.
There are strong situational trends backing my angles tonight. Tampa Bay is exceptionally hot, going 8-2 in its last 10 games. However, Unders have cashed in seven of the Rays’ last 10 contests. New York has struggled mightily, dropping nine of its last 10 games.
Despite the contrasting recent forms, my official prediction backs the road underdogs.
