The UFC’s first outdoor card kicks off with a featherweight scrap that could steal the show. Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia open UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House, and both men love to brawl.

Lopes is the number-two contender coming off back-to-back title losses to Alexander Volkanovski. Garcia rides a seven-fight win streak and gets his first crack at a ranked opponent. Here’s my Lopes vs. Garcia prediction.

Lopes vs. Garcia Prediction

This is a tricky one to call. Garcia is the cleaner, more powerful striker, and he manages range as well as anyone in the division. If this stays a kickboxing match, he can absolutely catch Lopes coming in.

But Lopes has a clear edge once the fight hits the mat. He’s a high-level grappler with a dozen career submissions, and Garcia’s takedown defense is the one place his game can spring a leak. The question is whether Lopes commits to wrestling or gets dragged into a firefight.

That choice has burned Lopes before. He’s got real confidence in his hands and sometimes too much of it, planting his feet to trade when he’d be better off changing levels. Against a sharper puncher like Garcia, standing in the pocket for three rounds is a gamble. The disciplined play is to mix in takedown threats early and make Garcia fight off his back foot.

Lopes has shown a stubborn streak about standing and trading, which gave him trouble against Jean Silva. Even so, he’s the more experienced fighter with the higher finishing ceiling, and he’s earned his spot near the top of this division.

I’ll take Lopes to find a way, likely by leaning on his grappling in the later rounds. At -149, the moneyline is a fair price on the better all-around fighter. Garcia is live, but Lopes is the pick.

Lopes is a -149 favorite, an implied probability of about 60%. Garcia comes back at +125, or roughly 44%. This is one of the tightest lines on the card outside the title fights, which fits a matchup with two clear and opposing paths to victory.

Garcia holds the reach edge and the bigger frame, plus a striking game that’s stopped most of his recent opponents. Lopes counters with 12 career submissions and a grappling base Garcia hasn’t had to deal with at this level. That zero in Garcia’s submission column is the number that jumps out, and it’s the lane Lopes should try to live in.
