An important game in the Eastern Conference playoff race takes place in Orlando on Wednesday as the Magic (29-25, 17-8 home, 35-19 ATS) host the New York Knicks (33-21, 14-13 away, 29-23-2 ATS) at the Kia Center (7:10 pm ET).

Despite playing their second game in as many nights, the hometown Magic are listed as 3.5-point favorites in Wednesday’s NBA odds.

New York Knicks +3.5 (-115) +135 O  211.5 (-110)

On the moneyline, Orlando is sitting at -160 to win straight-up with the underdogs Knicks at +135. The game total of just 211 is by far the lowest on the board among Wednesday’s massive 13-game NBA slate. (The second-lowest is 223.5 in Miami vs Philadelphia.) The Knicks have been one of the best under bets in the league this year, going 22-32 over/under. The Magic are 26-27-1 O/U.

As the NBA playoff bracket currently stands, the Knicks hold the #4 seed in the East and would have home-court advantage in a first-round series with the 76ers. The Magic are in a precarious position as the #8 seed; they would visit the Heat in the 7-vs-8 Play-In Game if the postseason started today.

Knicks Lose Three Straight Entering Wednesday

From Jan. 18 to Feb. 1, the Knicks were the hottest team in the NBA, winning nine straight and moving as high as third in the East. But New York and its retooled roster have since lost four of their past five, their only win in that span coming against the 18-36 Memphis Grizzlies. On Monday, they got off to brutal start in Houston – falling behind by 14 at halftime – and couldn’t quite climb out of the hole, ultimately losing 105-103 despite a strong second half.

The Knicks actually grabbed 12 more rebounds than Houston (51-39) and shot better from the field (45.7% vs 45.0%) but were woefully undisciplined, sending the Rockets to the free-throw line 33 times where Houston finished with a 23-7 edge in scoring.

Injuries have been the main reason for the recent decline. Both Julius Randle (24.0 PPG, 9.2 RPG) and OG Anunoby (15.6 PPG, 4.6 ) are out with shoulder and elbow injuries, respectively, while Isaiah Hartenstein (7.1 PPG, 8.7 RPG) has also missed time of late. Adding fuel to a concerning fire, both Hartenstein and Donte DiVincenzo (13.6 PPG, 2.5 AGP) are listed as questionable in Wednesday’s NBA lineups.

Orlando Under .500 in 2024

The Magic’s hot start to the season is fading further and further into the rearview mirror. The team has slid into the Play-In zone thanks to a 10-12 record since the turn of the calendar. Last night, they had a two-game win streak snapped by the OKC Thunder at home, falling 127-113. Orlando’s ordinarily stout defense (fourth in the league in D-Rating at 111.9) allowed OKC to shoot 54.8% from the field and 40.6% from three, and the Thunder ran away with the win despite the Magic owning a massive 48-31 edge on the glass.

Orlando’s offense couldn’t keep up with the hot-shooting Thunder, going just 41-of-91 from the floor (45.1%) and 11-of-36 from three (30.6%). An anemic attack is an issue that has plagued the Magic for much of the season. They average just 111.6 points per game (26th) and have a 112.6 O-Rating (24th).

NBA player props from DraftKings on Feb. 14.

The Knicks vs Magic player props show Jalen Brunson with a game-high over/under of 28.5. Though he’s averaging just 27.5 PPG, he’s taken on a heavier load of late due to the injuries. He’s exceeded 28.5 points 11 times in his last 14 games, averaging 32.3 PPG in that span.

Knicks vs Magic Prediction

This is a quick turnaround for Orlando against a New York team that’s had a full day to rest since their loss to Houston. At the same time, the Magic are one of the best teams in the league at spreading around minutes. No one played more than 35 minutes in last night’s loss to OKC, and they have 14 different player who are averaging at least 11.8 minutes per game (while playing at least 20 minutes).

The Knicks, meanwhile, are paper-thin due to injuries, and they just aren’t the same team without Randle and Anunoby on the court. Even with Randle on the floor (but prior to the trade for Anunoby), the Knicks fell 117-108 at Orlando on Dec. 29. Expect the much healthier Magic to send the Knicks to a fourth straight loss on Wednesday.

NYK vs ORL pick: Magic -3.5 (-105)
