If SBD’s projected March Madness bracket holds to form, the Miami Hurricanes should be a lock to make the NCAA Tournament, regardless of how they finish in the upcoming ACC Tournament.

That being said, there might be some extra motivation for Miami, the ACC regular season co-champion and top seed, who are looking up at two teams in the year-end conference tournament.

The Duke Blue Devils are the betting favorite, followed by the Virginia Cavaliers, in a field that’s less powerhouse than we’ve seen in previous years.

Let’s break down the tournament and share our favorite bet.

2023 ACC Tournament Odds

School Odds
Duke Blue Devis +280
Virginia Cavaliers +300
Miami Hurricanes +340
North Carolina Tar Heels +600
Clemson Tigers +600
North Carolina State Wolfpack +1200
Pittsburgh Panthers +1600
Wake Forest Demon Deacons +4000
Virginia Tech Hokies +4000
Syracuse Orange +10000
Florida State Seminoles +15000
Boston College Eagles +35000
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets +35000
Notre Dame Fighting Irish +50000
Louisville Cardinals +100000

On the strength of a season-ending 6-game win streak, Duke enters the ACC Tourney as +280 favorites, an implied probability of 26.32% of winning it all, and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Virginia Cavaliers, who shared regular season title honors with the ‘Canes are +300, followed by the U at +340.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, currently projected as a First Four team, could do themselves a favor if they win they tournament. They’re at +600 odds, tied with the Clemson Tigers.

ACC Tournament Schedule

It all gets underway on Tuesday, March 11, with 12th-seeded Florida State taking on 13-seed Georgia Tech at 2pm ET. They’re followed by no. 10 Boston College vs no. 15 Louisville at 4:30pm ET, ending with 11-seed Virginia Tech against no. 14 Notre Dame. Those games will be available on the ACC Network.

Wednesday’s only scheduled game so far is the 8th-seeded Syracuse Orange vs no. 9 Wake Forest, which goes at noon ET. Fifth-ranked Pitt Panthers play the winner of the Seminoles-Yellow Jackets at 2:30pm ET, followed by the Tar Heels, seeded seventh, taking on the Eagles-Cardinals winner. The night wraps up with the NC State Wolfpack battling the winner of Va Tech and Notre Dame.

The top four seeds — Miami, Virginia, Clemson and Duke — all received automatic berth into the quarterfinals, and will play each of the four survivors of the previous round on March 9. The winners of those four games make up the final four to be played on Friday, March 10.

The championship final goes Saturday, March 11 at 8:30pm ET. All games will be played at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. All games after the opening day can be seen live on ESPN or ESPN2.

Teams to Look Out For in ACC Tournament

It was an uneven start to 2023 for the Blue Devils, who went 4-4 in ACC play, taking L’s on the road at Wake, NC State, Clemson and Va Tech.

They’ve been hot to end the year, winning nine of their final 11 games to close out the regular season. They’re led by Kyle Filipowski, averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

Duke ranks 31st overall at KenPom, powered by a defense that ranks 27th in defensive efficiency, allowing just 63.8 points per game. However, they’re just ninth in scoring in the ACC at 71.8 points per game, and a lowly 13th in the conference in 3-point shooting at 32.9%.

Virginia’s trademark tight, defensive-minded games are back to torment anyone not willing to put in the 40 minutes of mental fortitude to keep up. Defensively, the Cavaliers are 10th in the nation allowing just 60.5 points per game. They average just 68.2 points on offense, which ranks 13th in the conference.

As for Miami, they led the ACC in scoring at 79.6 points per game, and were the best 3-point shooting team in the conference at 37.2%. They’ve had some great wins, including crushing Duke on Feb 6, and the season-ending win over Pitt to lock up the ACC regular season crown, but there are also concerns about rising to the occasion.

This comes on the heels of their second-to-last game against the lowly Seminoles, who rallied from 25 down to beat them 85-84. Still, the ‘Canes are 18th in adjusted efficiency, and boast a 4-pack of double-digit scorers, led by Isaiah Wong at 15.9 points per game.

2023 ACC Tournament Prediction

The Virginia Cavaliers enter this tournament as the conference’s top-rated to take it all in the NCAA Tournament odds, at no. 10. Further down the board are Miami, Duke (+6000) and North Carolina (+6500).

The Tar Heels are in their backyard, and of the top four seeds, they have the most work to put in to guarantee they are dancing. They are competent on both ends of the court, 68th in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency and 43rd in adjusted defensive efficiency.

While a bet at +600 wouldn’t be a bad thing, UNC has just a Feb 25 W over Virginia that would count as a marquee win.

Last Five ACC Tournament Winners

ACC Champion Year
Virginia Tech 2022
Georgia Tech 2021
Not Held 2020
Duke 2019
Virginia 2018

I’m all in for Miami’s prove-it run through the ACC, and that’s great value for the top seed. Plus, it would keep the current streak of different tournament champions going five years and running (the 2020 tourney was cancelled).

Looking for more value? Perhaps the most electric player in the conference is NC State’s Terquavion Smith, who should be hearing his name in the NBA draft this year. The Wolfpack (+1200) have wins over both Duke and Miami.

Pick: Miami (+340)
