  • Bovada has moved Pittsburgh linebacker Devin Bush to +500 in its Defensive Rookie of the Year odds
  • Bush had 10 tackles in his NFL preseason debut
  • The Michigan product is now the betting favorite, ahead of injury-hampered Nick Bosa of the 49ers

It only took one preseason game for Devin Bush to establish himself as the favorite to be the 2019 NFL DROY.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ inside linebacker recorded 10 tackles, including seven solo tackles, as the Steelers downed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-28 in their preseason opener.

Bovada moved quickly to establish Bush as the new favorite in their NFL DROY odds. Bovada put Bush’s odds at +500. BetOnline, though, still lists Bush as their second betting choice at +800, behind Devin White of the Buccaneers and even with Nick Bosa of the 49ers.

Josh Allen (Jaguars) +900 +1600

*Odds taken 08/11/19.

Bush opened at +1300 in the 2019 NFL DROY odds and improved to +750 before this latest adjustment.

He’s No Bush Leaguer

The Steelers traded up in the 2019 Draft to land Bush as a replacement for Ryan Shazier and the early returns are making it look to be a very wise investment. Some football people are already making comparisons to Hall of Famer Ray Lewis.

He displayed his sideline to sideline mobility and the footspeed to close quickly when he took an angle on a ball-carrier.

Linebacker play hampered the Steelers last season, but in the opener, Pittsburgh’s inside linebackers accounted for 13 tackles in the first half alone.

Devin (White) vs Devin (Bush)

The Steelers-Buccaneers preseason meeting also showcased the top two drafted inside linebackers, who also happen to share the same given name. Bush was the clear winner in this verdict over Tampa Bay’s Devin White.

BetOnline still lists White as their +600 chalk to win NFL DROY.

To be fair, Bush played the entire first half, whereas White was on the field for Tampa Bay’s first two defensive series of the game, making one tackle.

While Bush enjoyed a remarkable debut, things aren’t going as well for San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa. The second overall choice in the 2019 NFL Draft, suffered a sprained ankle in practice and his status for San Fran’s season opener is uncertain.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets saw action for just 11 snaps in his preseason debut, so like White, was offered little chance to shine.

A rookie who did turn heads was Cleveland Browns LB Mack Wilson. Cleveland’s fifth-round draft pick out of Alabama made two interceptions, including a pick-six.

Don’t Beat Around The Bush

About the only person who wasn’t impressed with his first taste of NFL action was Bush.

Don’t listen to him. He’s the real deal. He’s a playmaker, and that’s who gets the attention of the voters.

If you haven’t already, go to BetOnline and take +800 on Bush as NFL DROY.

You’ll be glad you did.
