The Chargers (5-3, 3-1 away) limp into the Bay Area tonight for a showdown with the 49ers (4-4, 2-1 home) on Sunday Night Football.

LA has been decimated by injuries on offense as we’ll explore, and have struggled badly to put up points over its last three games. Life won’t get any easier tonight, as San Francisco boasts one of the top defenses in the league.

As a result, we’re bearish on the Chargers offensive outlook. Our Chargers vs 49ers same-game parlay reflects that, and bettors are leaning heavily towards an underwhelming offensive game in general in the Chargers vs 49ers public betting splits.

LA Chargers Under 20.5 Points

LA didn’t reach 20 points last week against the lowly Falcons until Cameron Dicker’s game-winning field goal as time expired. In fact, the Chargers managed just six second half points versus an Atlanta defense that ranks 29th per DVOA.

Justin Herbert is clearly missing his top two-receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, who’ll both be on the sidelines again per the Chargers vs 49ers injury report. Herbert and LA have averaged less than 20 points in their past three contests overall, while San Fran held the defending champion Rams to only 14 points in their own building in their last outing.

The 49ers are fresh off a bye, and should be able to turn LA into a one-dimensional offense. San Fran ranks fourth against the run per DVOA, and if they go ahead early as the betting odds suggest they will, they’ll be able to pin their ears back and unleash their top-10 pass rush on Herbert and Co.

DeAndre Carter Over 29.5 Receiving Yards

With Williams and Allen out, there is massive opportunity for Josh Palmer and DeAndre Carter, the next two LA receivers on the depth chart.

Carter has seen 13 targets over the past two games alone, converting those into eight catches and 90 receiving yards. He’s by no means an exciting player to back, but he should see plenty of volume in a game where the Chargers are expected to be trailing.

DeAndre Carter Stats – Last 8 Games

REC YDS TD
5 53 0
3 37 0
3 17 0
2 9 0
2 16 0
3 31 0
3 55 0
3 64 1

Carter has reached at least 30 receiving yards in five of his past eight games, and on each occasion where he cleared the number the contest was within one score or LA was playing from behind.

Jimmy Garoppolo Under 249.5 Passing Yards

Make no mistake, the 49ers have no interest in throwing the ball if they don’t have to. If game script goes their way, as one of our experts is predicting in the Chargers vs 49ers picks, San Fran is going to pound the rock mercilessly.

That’s especially true with star Christian McCaffrey now leading the backfield, and reinforcements to the running back room are coming tonight as former starting RB Eli Mitchell is making his return.

The matchup also heavily dictates a run heavy approach by the Niners. LA is giving up a league-worst 5.71 yards per carry and just lost their best run-stopping defensive lineman Austin Johnson for the season.

In San Francisco’s four wins this season, Garoppolo has failed to clear 240 passing yards three times, averaging just 220 yards per outing. He’s an easy fade in the Chargers vs 49ers player props tonight, as are some of his main receiving options.
