Kansas City opened the week in a tie with the Buccaneers at +800 odds, but now sit at +700, looking up only at the Buffalo Bills.

The Chargers, expected to battle with the Chiefs for supremacy in the AFC West, tumble a couple of spots to +1400, in a tie for fifth with the Rams and Packers.

Mahomes Gets Help in Win

In an early season tilt between two teams at the top of the Super Bowl odds — KC was tied for second, LA held the fourth-best figure — Patrick Mahomes got just enough help to pull out the win.

A week after throwing five TD’s and over 360 yards, the Bolts were able to contain the Chiefs’ pivot, holding him to to 24-for-35 passing for 235 yards and two TDs.

After falling behind by 10 points in the third quarter, Mahomes went to work, connecting on a 41-yard TD strike with Justin Watson, before another drive ended with a FG to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

The game-changing play came from another Watson, rookie Jaylen. With the Chargers inside at the KC three-yard line and poised to take back the lead, Watson picked off a Justin Herbert pass and returned it 99 yards to the house to give KC a 24-17 lead they would never relinquish.

Herbert Injured in Defeat

Kansas City’s defense also did damage to Herbert, with a Mike Danna hit doing the most damage, as the star pivot was in the hurry-up with the Chargers trailing 27-17.

Herbert stayed in the game with major discomfort in his rib area, at one point unable to run for an easy third down conversion and chucking the ball just past the line of scrimmage.

Of course, he did follow that up with a seed to Andre Carter to set up their final TD of the game.

Herbert, who’s running neck-and-neck with Mahomes near the top of the 2023 NFL MVP odds, finished 33-for-38 for 334 yards, with three TD passes and the back-breaking pick-six.

As we mentioned after a blowout win over the Cardinals, it’s highly unlikely you’ll see KC’s title odds cross +1000 again. If you’re in on them to win the Super Bowl, you should probably get that wager in shortly.

Los Angeles showed they can hang with anyone, and are also a nice flyer at +1400.

Odds to Win AFC West

Team Odds
Kansas City Chiefs -115
Los Angeles Chargers +280
Denver Broncos +340
Las Vegas Raiders +1000

Odds as of September 15.

Kansas City’s odds to win the West shorten from +125 all the way to -115, while the Chargers drop from +190 to +280. Despite losing, Denver’s odds actually shorten, from +400 to +340.

KC Holds Pole Position in West

If someone’s planning to knock KC off their divisional title odds perch that’s six years running, it’s not going to be easy.

The Chiefs are the only team in the division currently with a winning record, including an important head-to-head win over the Chargers.

Denver is already behind the chains after a dubious anti #LetRussCook moment for new head coach Nathaniel Hackett, while the Raiders are 0-1 after losing to LA in Week 1.

It’s not smooth sailing for the Chiefs, though. Over the next six weeks, they’ll have tilts with Tampa Bay, Buffalo and San Francisco, while also getting Las Vegas, and a Tennessee team that was the top seed in the AFC a year ago.

Assuming Herbert can stay healthy, five out of LA’s next six opponents include the Jaguars, Texans, Browns, Seahawks and Falcons, with the first of two meetings with Denver sprinkled in.

Denver did blow that game with Seattle, but they can get right with games against Houston, Indy, the Jets and Jags over the next seven weeks, with tougher tilts against the 49ers, Raiders and Chargers in the mix.

All this to say, really, that while the Chiefs are in the driver’s seat in the division currently, a lot can change. I’d take the extended odds of the Chargers or Broncos at this point vs a wager on KC that has the least value.
