  • The Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with Mike McCarthy
  • Odds are out on the Dallas Cowboys next head coach, and a familiar face is favored
  • Below, see the odds to be the Dallas Cowboys next head coach

After five underwhelming seasons, Mike McCarthy is out as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, which means the search has begun for the franchise’s tenth HC. DraftKings has posted odds on who will fill the vacancy, and the name at the top of the list will be very familiar to Cowboys fans, and indeed the entire football universe.

Dallas Cowboys Next Head Coach Odds

Candidate (Current Job) Odds
Deion Sanders (Colorado Buffaloes HC) +100
Kellen Moore (Philadelphia Eagles OC) +350
Kliff Kingsbury (Washington Commanders OC) +450
Joe Brady (Buffalo Bills OC) +550
Ben Johnson (Detroit Lions OC) +650
Liam Coen (Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC) +750
Jason Witten (Liberty Christian HC) +850
Jon Gruden (Milano Seamen advisor) +950
Bill Belichick (North Carolina Tar Heels HC) +1000
Steve Sarkisian (Texas Longhorns HC) +1200
Aaron Glenn (Detroit Lions DC) +1400
Brian Flores (Minnesota Vikings DC) +1600
Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss Rebels HC) +1800
Lincoln Riley (USC Trojans HC) +2000
Al Harris (Dallas Cowboys Asst. HC) +2000
Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame Fighting Irish HC) +2500

“Prime Time” himself, Deion Sanders, has opened as the even-money favorite to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the team he plied his trade with as a cornerback and returner from 1995 to 1995. Kellen Mond, the current offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, is the second-favorite at +350.

Is Deion Ready to Leave Colorado Already?

It seems like just yesterday that Deion Sanders landed the HC job at the University of Colorado. He just completed his second season with the Buffs and is coming off a rock-solid 9-4 season. Colorado was even in the College Football Playoff conversation until a loss at Kansas late in the season.

Two seasons isn’t a long tenure, and when he arrived in Boulder, it seemed like Sanders was there for the long haul. But both of his sons on the team, Shedeur and Shilo, will likely be gone next season. And if the Cowboys come asking, it’s very difficult to imagine that Sanders would turn them down to stay with the Buffs.

I’m not sold on Deion in the pros, personally. His rah-rah attitude is perfect for college, where recruiting is half the battle. I wouldn’t bet on Sanders at odds this short.

Kellen Moore Already Has a History with Jerry Jones

Current Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was the Dallas OC from 2019-22 before a one-year stint with the Chargers in 2023. He had a solid season running the Philly offense, and oversaw some excellent offensive seasons in Big D.

This obviously won’t be Jerry Jones’ main consideration, but hiring Moore would also mean depleting an arch-rival’s coaching staff.

Jason Witten Has Never Even Coached in College

It’s fun seeing Jason Witten’s name on the list, but it’s preposterous to list the former Dallas tight end at +850 odds, which has a 10.5% implied probability. Witten has been the coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, since 2021. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard of that particular school, it’s because it’s a high school.

As good as Texas high-school football is – and as successful as Witten’s tenure has been (back-to-back state titles in 2023 and 2024) – he isn’t making the jump to Cowboys head coach after four years under the Friday Night Lights.

Bill Belichick (+1000) is another name I wouldn’t even consider betting on. The Patriots legend came out of his one-year retirement to take the head job at North Carolina for 2025. He hired his son, Stephen, away from the Washington Huskies to be his defensive coordinator. He’s not quitting before he even sets foot in Chapel Hill.
