Commanders Can’t Close

After a pair of poor performances, Carson Wentz displayed some of the talent that made him a the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, his late mistake cost the Commanders a chance at a win, and sent them to the bottom of the NFC East.

David Long Jr picked off Wentz at the 1-yard line with six seconds to play, as the Tennessee Titans held on for a 21-17 win.

Wentz was 25-for-38 for 359 yards and two touchdowns, both to 2nd-year man Dyami Brown, giving his team a chance to break their three-game slide, before his sixth INT of the year.

Washington’s defense was also a big factor in keeping this close. They sacked Ryan Tannehill five times, holding him to 181 yards passing and one TD. Derrick Henry was a workhorse, however, running for 102 yards on 28 carries and two scores.

Rookie Brian Robinson, who was shot in the leg twice after an attempted robbery, made his Commanders’ debut Sunday. He led the team in rushing with 22 yards on nine carries, and should continue to figure in Washington’s offensive plans going forward.

Bears Blasted Early

A cleaner start, and the Chicago Bears are likely in a tie for second in the NFC North, instead of a game out of the basement.

The Bears found themselves down 21-3 midway through the second quarter against the Vikings, only to pull ahead by a point with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter, before eventually losing to Minnesota 29-22.

Justin Fields had his best passing game of the year, though still finishing with a modest 208 yards on 15-for-21 passing. His TD toss to Velus Jones Jr was his first in 15 quarters.

One of the strengths of their season, Chicago could not get the running game going. with Fields leading the team with 47 yards. David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert combined for just 31 yards on 16 carries, with Montgomery adding a score.

Coming into the game, the Bears were the 4th-best rushing team in the league, racking up 787 yards on a healthy 4.9 yards a carry.

Commanders vs Bears Line Prediction

How does a 1-win team with four straight losses open as a favorite? Oddsmakers are likely looking at Wentz’s ability to move the ball through the air, against a Bears squad that struggles to pass.

Heading into this week, Chicago was the only team in the NFL yet to surpass 100 pass attempts, and they have just three TD passes on the season, tied for 2nd-worst in the league.

However, the Bears might be able to force Wentz into some bad decision making if they can get some pressure on him, which almost every team has this season. He was sacked three more times Sunday. He’s now been sacked 20 times through five weeks.

While both teams are dealing with injuries, none would be considered gameplan altering.

The Bears have yet to win on the road, but they’re 2-0 at home on the year, while the Commanders are winless in two away games. For that factor alone, expect the line to move even closer to pick’em as we get closer to kickoff.
