DK Metcalf provided one of the top highlights of the NFL season Sunday night and set social media ablaze.

The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver amazingly chased down Budda Baker on what looked like it was going to a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Arizona Cardinals safety.

That play inspired some books to set odds who would win in a race between Metcalf and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who is considered by many to be the fastest player in the NFL.

Tyreek Hill vs DK Metcalf Race Odds

Player Odds
Tyreek Hill (Chiefs) -175
DK Metcalf (Seahawks) +135

Odds taken Oct 27

For the prop to be valid, the two must square off in a televised race in either 2020 or 2021.

And for those who might have missed Metcalf’s mad dash in the Seahawks’ 37-34 overtime loss or just want to see it yet again, here you go:

Pushing the Speed Limit

Metcalf’s remarkable play came in the second quarter Sunday night.

The Seahawks had the ball at the Cardinals’ three-yard line when Russell Wilson attempted a pass to running back Chris Carson. Baker picked it off and was seemingly on his way to a touchdown until being pulled down at the eight.

According to NFL NextGen Stats, Metcalf reached a top speed of 22.64 mph on the play. That would have caused him to get a ticket if he happened to be running in a school zone.

Metcalf also covered 114.8 yards on the play.

For comparison sake, Baker’s top speed was 21.17 mph.

Metcalf’s top recorded time in the 40-yard dash is the 4.33 he seconds he ran at the NFL Combine last year following his collegiate career at Mississippi and before being drafted in the second round by the Seahawks.

Here is an example of Metcalf’s speed during his days at Ole Miss.

Running DownHill

Hill cemented his legend as a speedster and helped his draft stock immensely when he ran a 4.29 in the 40 at West Alabama’s pro day in 2016.

Also invited to participate in Alabama’s pro day, Hill was clocked in an amazing 4.21.

Hill began his collegiate career at Oklahoma State, a Power Five school. However, a domestic abuse arrest caused him to be expelled from school and he wound up at Division II West Alabama.

NFL teams were justifiably leery of Hill because of his arrest and the fact he played at a lower level of college football. However, his pro day performance was enough to sway the Chiefs into selecting him in the fifth round of the draft.

Hill has gone on to show he is more than just a speedster. He has twice been selected as an All-Pro and been a Pro Bowler in each of his four full seasons.

Here is an example of how Hill’s speed has impacted the Chiefs.

Don’t Count On It

Will we see a race between Metcalf and Hill? Maybe if someone could organize an event for charity.

Perhaps Cleveland Browns sack master Myles Garrett could pull it off.

Don’t count on it, though.

It is hard to imagine the Seahawks or Chiefs allowing a star player to potentially risk injury, even if it were to aid a charitable cause.

The NFL used to hold a fastest man contest at the Pro Bowl, matching four players in a 40-yard dash. However, the event was last held in 2007 because many teams were concerned about possible injuries.

Worth a Wager?

If a Metcalf-Hill match race were to take place, it probably would not be worth betting. The two are basically even speed-wise and there would be a lot of randomness to a one-time event that picking a winner would be like throwing darts.

However, if you absolutely had to place a bet, I would play the underdog with Metcalf based on Sunday night.

I’m sure Budda Baker would agree.
