  • Browns took league-high 18 penalties in Week 1
  • Over/Under set at 9.5 for this week’s game against the Jets
  • The game is in prime time on Monday Night Football

The Cleveland Browns had a ton of hype behind them entering Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season after they acquired the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. to pair with his best friend Jarvis Landry on offense and Olivier Vernon to shore up the defensive line.

The team was wildly overhyped in the offseason, yet in the opening week they were dominated by the Tennessee Titans, and a big factor was the penalties they took. It was a team-wide undisciplined effort as they took 18 penalties, and now sportsbooks have released a prop on how many penalties the Brownies will take in Week 2.

Can Cleveland Clean Up Their Act?

They took a lot of penalties due to lack of discipline, which can be fixed heading into Week 2 with a re-focused effort on the road as Beckham returns to the stadium he used to play in as a Giant.

However, the holding penalties are a concern, as well as the two illegal blocks they had. Their offensive line struggled mightily with the Titans front, especially after LT Greg Robinson was ejected for kicking a defender in the head after a play.

Browns Penalties in Week 1 by Infraction

Unsportsmanlike Conduct 1

After the debacle in Week 1, the coaching staff has committed to changing the atmosphere and making sure they do not take that many penalties again.

“I did not see that coming,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said. “That is not how we practiced. That is not how we prepared. I did not do a very good job of making sure that we did not have penalties. That is just as much the coaches’ fault, my fault, players’ faults. Everybody takes some blame for that.”

Right now, I favor the over as it is hard to cut the team’s penalties in half, but there is value on both sides if you believe the coaching staff can keep the team under control. After Week 1, I am not sure if they can as the Browns brought in a lot of high maintenance players that could lose their head if the game doesn’t start in their favor.
