Pickett Makes His Charge In OROY Odds

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin called on Pickett to replace Mitch Trubisky with his team trailing 10-6 at halftime. The Acrisure Stadium crowd roared its approval when Pickett stepped on the field.

The first-round draft pick became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for two touchdowns in his debut. The scores put the Steelers ahead 20-10 early in the fourth quarter.

Pickett also completed 10 of 13 passes for 120 yards. However, all three incompletions resulted in interceptions.

The second interception hurt the most as Michael Carter II’s pick with 3:34 remaining gave the Jets the ball at its’ 35-yard line with the Steelers leading 20-17. New York then marched 10 plays for the winning touchdown with Breece Hall scoring on a 2-yard run with 16 seconds left.

Pickett tried a desperation heave from the Steelers’ 48 on the last play of the game, but it was intercepted by Lamarcus Joyner.

The loss dropped the Steelers to 1-3. They visit the Buffalo Bills this week, but Tomlin is noncommittal so far on whether Pickett or Trubisky will start.

Pickett was the best quarterback during the preseason in a three-way competition for the QB1 job with Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. The Steelers, though, went with Trubisky after signing him to a two-year, $14-million contract in free agency in March.

Considering the Steelers used their first-round draft pick on Pickett and they’re struggling to win games, the 24-year-old figures to get plenty of playing time at some point this season if not this week.

Olave New OROY Odds Favorite

The new favorite in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds is New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave.

His odds improved from +800 to +450 while the previous top choice, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London, went from +450 to +600.

On Sunday, Olave had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Sains’ 28-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. The score was the first of his career and came on a 4-yard pass from Andy Dalton, who was subbing at quarterback for the injured Jameis Winston.

Through four games, Olave has 21 receptions for 335 yards.

London was a nonfactor as the Falcons beat the visiting Cleveland Browns 23-20 in Atlanta. He was limited to two catches for 17 yards.

However, London does have 18 receptions for 231 yards and two touchdowns for the season.

Pickens Gets Coattail Effect

Steelers wide receiver George Pickens saw his NFL OROY odds improve along with his teammate Pickett. The second-round draft pick went from a +1600 choice to +1200.

The Steelers got the speedy Pickens much more involved in the offense Sunday. He proved to be a tough matchup for the Jets as he finished with six catches for 102 yards.

In his first three games, Pickens had a total of five catches for 65 yards.

Conversely, Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods’ odds took a huge tumble. His is now at +10000 a week after being posted at +1600.

Woods had only one catch Sunday, though it went for 33 yards, as the Colts lost to the Tennessee Titans 24-17 at home. Woods had just two catches coming into the game, but both went for touchdowns.
