Bruins Coming Off Stinker
Boston’s six-game winning streak came to a crashing halt on Friday. The Bruins fell behind 5-1 and lost 6-4 to the Buffalo Sabres, ranked 31st overall in the 31-team NHL.
Boston had allowed just seven goals during its six wins in a row. Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron (lower-body injury) didn’t play in the loss. It’s the first game he’s missed all season.
Both Bergeron and defenseman Jared Tinordi (head) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.
All three players acquired by Boston at the NHL trade deadline are playing stellar roles since arriving. Taylor Hall has posted 3-3-6 numbers in seven games. Mike Reilly is providing a steadying presence to the blueline and has four assists. Curtis Lazar is injecting some life into the Bruins’ fourth line with 1-1-2 totals.
Penguins Taking Flight
Pittsburgh has won three in a row, four of the last five and seven of the past nine games. This will be the fourth game of a five-game homestand. The Penguins have points in nine straight home games (7-1-1) since losing 2-1 to Boston on March 16th.
The defense is going on the offense for the Penguins. Kris Letang has 17 points (2-15-17) over the past 16 games. Cody Ceci (2-9-11, 14 games), Mike Matheson (3-8-11, 11 games) and Brian Dumoulin (3-5-8, 11 games) are also carrying hot hands from the back end. The Penguins are still without center Evgeni Malkin (lower-body injury), left wing Brandon Tanev (upper-body injury) and center Fredrick Gaudreau (lower-body injury). All three have resumed skating.
Malkin has been out for the past 19 games, while Tanev has missed 10 games and Gaudreau six. However, right wing Kasperi Kapanen has played the past two games after missing 13 with a foot injury.

The Bruins have won four of six games from the Penguins this season. The Penguins are 4-1 straight up in their past five games, but just 2-4 against the spread over their last six games.
