Betting Capitals’ Over the Total Returning Value

With nine games left, Alexander Ovechkin has faded in the Rocket Richard odds, but he still has a pretty good chance at securing his ninth career 50-goal season. The Great 8 sits at 46 goals with nine games left entering this contest.

He and the Caps are going against the heir to his goal scoring supremacy, Auston Matthews, who is running away with the goal scoring crown this season. Not only will this game feature Ovy and Matthews, two of the top four scorers in the NHL, but both teams are evoking memories of 1980’s firewagon hockey with their scoring exploits of late.

Washington’s scored a ridiculous 23 goals during their four-game win streak. That’s an average of almost six tallies per game. Overall, they’re 7-1-1 when you bet them to hit the over in their last nine games. The only time in that span they didn’t go over the total, was in a 5-1 loss to Minnesota, just missing by a single goal.

They’re playing their best hockey of the season at precisely the right time. With a 6-2 record in their last eight, the Caps have an outside shot of grabbing third place in the Metropolitan Division and avoiding a possible first-round matchup with Florida, who have the best Stanley Cup odds of any Eastern Conference team.

Over in Maple Leafs’ Games Paying Off

Notwithstanding their recent 5-2 loss to the Sabres on Tuesday, the Leafs have been filling the net with as much regularity as the Capitals have lately. Prior to the loss against Buffalo, Toronto had scored 43 goals in eight games, 5.38 per contest.

A lot of that scoring is thanks to Matthews, who is looking to win back-to-back Rocket Richard trophies and has moved straight to the front of the line in the Hart Trophy odds. The Leafs’ centre sits at 58 goals and will likely be the third player this century to score 60 in a season.

In their last nine contests, The Leafs are 6-1-2 when you bet them to hit the over. Oddsmakers have consistently moved the total to an unusually high 7 goals in games featuring the Leafs recently, due to their goal scoring prowess. It comes off as a slight surprise that the over/under total sits at 6.5 instead of an even 7 in this one.

The Leafs defeated Washington 5-3 in their only previous meeting this season.

Capitals vs Maple Leafs Pick & Prediction

At some point, both of these teams will play a low-scoring game, but until that happens, the best bet is to follow the trend and bet on a lot of goals happening in this game.

Injury concerns to Leafs number one goalie, Jack Campbell, further support betting the over. He hasn’t played in a week and head coach Sheldon Keefe indicated that he was not at full health, but was expected to get the start against Washington.

Campbell has looked shaky in his last two outings, giving up seven goals on 44 shots for an .841 save percentage.

Matthews, who failed to score against Buffalo, hasn’t gone back-to-back games without scoring in well over a month, so a good prop bet could be made picking number 34 to bury in this one.

The best prediction in the Thursday NHL odds is still betting over 6.5 goals at Barstool Sportsbook in what should be a fun game to watch.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-132)
