  • The Florida Panthers are solid -295 road favorites over the Detroit Red Wings in an NHL afternoon game on Sunday, April 17
  • Detroit is 0-1-1 straight up against the Panthers this season; Florida is 10-2 SU over last 12 trips to Detroit

The Florida Panthers are atop the NHL’s Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings are bottom feeders in the same group.

That wide gulf between the two teams is also registered in the recent results on the ice between the two clubs and on the odds boards as they ready to face each other again.

Overall, the Panthers have won four straight and six of seven from the Red Wings. At Detroit, Florida has captured 10 of the last 12 meetings.

Perhaps it’s no wonder then that it’s Florida which is a stellar -295 road favorite over Detroit for Sunday’s afternoon clash. However, the Panthers are just 3-7 on the puck line in the last 10 games against the Red Wings.

Puck drop is set for 1pm ET at Little Caesars Arena. Across Michigan online sportsbooks, Florida is the second betting choice in the Stanley Cup odds at +550.

According to Barstool Sportsbook, in the NHL betting trends the Panthers and Red Wings offer two of the NHL’s top five season-long total percentages. Florida is #2 (60.8%) at hitting on the over, while Detroit is #5 (58.1%). The Panthers are #1 in the NHL in goals for per game (4.16). Detroit is second-last overall in the 32-team NHL in goals against per game (3.77). However, four of the last five Panthers-Red Wings games have gone under.

Goose eggs have been wild for the Red Wings of late. Thursday, Detroit won 3-0 on the road at the Carolina Hurricanes. Saturday afternoon, the Wings were blanked 4-0 at Madison Square Garden by the New York Rangers.

Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider is the betting favorite in the Calder Trophy odds. He ranks among the NHL’s top rookie defender with six goals (second), 41 assists (first), 47 points (first), 2 PPG (T1st), 20 PPP (first), 2 OTG (first), 4 GWG (first), 169 shots (first) and 23:09 TOI (first).

Friday’s 6-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets extended Florida’s winning streak to nine games.

Forward Jonathan Huberdeau, considered a longshot contender in the Hart Trophy odds, collected three points. That pushed his current scoring streak to 13 games. Sam Bennett collected an assist to extend his point streak to five games.

Florida vs Detroit Injury Report

Detroit forward Oscar Sundqvist missed Saturday’s game with an undisclosed ailment. He’s listed as day-to-day. Rookie forward Chase Pearson was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids to play in his place. Forwards Robby Fabbri (knee) and Carter Rowney (undisclosed) are out for the season. Forward Givani Smith (undisclosed) is also out.

Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad (lower-body injury) is listed as week-to-week. Forward Noel Acciari (upper-body injury) isn’t on the road trip.

Might Red Wings Debut Hellberg?

Late last week the Red Wings signed veteran goalie Magnus Hellberg, 31, who played for Sweden at the Beijing Olympics. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill was non-committal whether he might play Hellberg on Sunday. The Swede’s last NHL game action was in 2017.

It’s more likely that Alex Nedeljkovic will get the nod. In his last start, Nedeljkovic made 46 saves in blanking the Hurricanes. He’s posted a pair of 40-plus save shutouts this season.
