Flyers vs Devils Prediction, Picks & Odds for Thursday Night
By Brady Trettenero in NHL Hockey
Published:
- The Flyers opened the season with a 7-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and head to Newark on short rest
- New Jersey plays its first game of the year tonight, with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier anchoring the top two lines
- I’ve made my Flyers vs Devils prediction for Thursday’s Metropolitan Division opener at Prudential Center
The Philadelphia Flyers (0-1-0) visit the New Jersey Devils (0-0-0) Thursday night at Prudential Center in a Metropolitan Division matchup to open the Devils’ season. Philadelphia is coming off a brutal 7-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, while New Jersey had the luxury of rest and a full practice week heading into tonight.
The Flyers swept all three meetings with the Devils last season, but Dan Vladar allowed seven goals on 38 shots in the opener and Joseph Woll is expected to take over in net tonight. Jake Allen is projected to start New Jersey’s opener.
Puck drop is at 7 pm ET on ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+. Here are my Flyers vs Devils prediction and NHL odds for Thursday night.
Flyers vs Devils Prediction
- Devils ML (-177 at BetMGM)
My Flyers vs Devils prediction is on New Jersey at home. The Devils opened at -150 and have been bet up to -177, roughly a 63.9% implied probability. That number feels right for a rested home team facing an opponent coming off a 7-0 shutout loss.
Philadelphia swept the season series last year, but this Flyers team is reeling. They allowed 38 shots against Pittsburgh and posted a 37.8% Corsi at 5-on-5. The quick turnaround leaves little time to regroup before another road test.
New Jersey’s center depth gives them a massive advantage. Hughes and Hischier down the middle against Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak is a mismatch the Devils should win at even strength and on the power play.
Flyers vs Devils Odds
Odds from BetMGM as of October 1.
The Flyers vs Devils odds have New Jersey as a comfortable home favorite at -177, about a 63.9% implied chance. Philadelphia is +144 on the moneyline. The total sits at 5.5 with the over juiced to -120, down from an opening number of 6. New customers can use the BetMGM promo code to bet on tonight’s game.
The moneyline has moved from -150 to -177 since opening. The Devils are drawing 90.16% of the handle, and the puck line handle (77.73%) also favors New Jersey despite the Flyers getting 66.60% of the tickets on that market.
Flyers vs Devils 2025-26 Season Comparison
Last season’s numbers show two closely matched teams, but the power play gap is notable. New Jersey ran a 22.0% power play compared to Philadelphia’s 15.7%. The Flyers had the edge in goals against (2.91 to 3.09), although one rough opener does not erase that larger sample.
Flyers vs Devils Starting Goalies
Joseph Woll is expected to start for Philadelphia after Vladar allowed seven goals on 38 shots against Pittsburgh. Jake Allen is the projected starter for New Jersey. The Devils are fresh, having not played yet this season, and Allen should benefit from a defense anchored by Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce on the top pair.
Flyers vs Devils Injuries
Philadelphia: Denver Barkey (lower body, out), Nikita Grebenkin (upper body, out)
New Jersey: Connor Brown (lower body, out), Johnathan Kovacevic (knee, out)
