There are 10 games on the NHL schedule Thursday night, but none carry the clout of Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers facing off against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Puck drop is set for 7pm ET on Thursday, February 23rd with Sportsnet and AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh carrying the broadcast.

Both sides have been sliding of late, with the Pens losing three straight while the Oilers just broke a miserable four-game slide, their longest of the season. There is no moneyline favorite in this one, with the over/under set at 7 goals in the Oilers vs Penguins odds.

The Oilers have scored at least four goals in each of their last four games and given up at least that many in four of their last five contests. For more Oilers vs Penguins odds, see the table below as we’ll also offer up our best bet and prediction.

Oilers Continue to Light the Lamp

Can all out firewagon hockey be the key to success? Fans in Edmonton sure hope so, because these Oilers give up a lot of goals, but score even more. Led by captain and Hart Trophy odds lock, Connor McDavid, Edmonton scores a league-best 3.76 goals per game. However, they’re conceding 3.26 goals per outing, ranking 21st in the league.

On special teams, they have a historically great power play, converting on 31.7% of their opportunities. Conversely, the penalty killing unit has had its fair share of struggles, as they rank just 25th overall, staving off 75% of opposition chances when they’re down a man.

Needless to say, it’s been a roller coaster of a season. Even singular games have had their fans riding incredible highs and lows. They have squandered three-goal leads in two of their last three contests.

What all this leads to is a lot of goals and a very good team to bet the over on. If you picked the Oil to hit the over all season, they’ve provided a 31.32% return on investment, by far the best in the league.

What does make those bets a little tough, is that the total is usually set higher than most other NHL games. When they visit Crosby and the Pens, the magic number to surpass is seven goals.

Penguins Struggling at Wrong Time of Year

The Penguins better get their act together fast. Never mind trying to climb the table in the Stanley Cup odds, if this team doesn’t start winning some games soon, they might not even make the playoffs.

They just lost three in a row, two to an Islanders team that has actually passed them in points in the standings, although the Pens have four games in hand. Pittsburgh entered the 3rd period with leads in both those games against the Isles, but couldn’t hold on and things got plenty physical in their most recent 4-2 defeat.

A win at home against the offensively dynamic Oil is crucial for Crosby’s team. These games are always promoted as the predecessor in number 87, taking on the heir to his throne as the NHL’s best, in the Oilers number 97. The Pens owned the head-to-head’s at the outset of McDavid’s career, but the Oil have won four of the last five meetings.

One thing that is a positive for the Pens side is their sterling record against the Western Conference this year. In their last 17 games against Western foes, the Pens own a 13-4 mark.

Oilers vs Penguins Pick & Prediction

Both teams have been flailing of late, although the Oilers did finally snap their season-long losing skid with a win over the Flyers on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the Oil have had a really easy schedule lately, playing only two teams that are holding playing positions in their 11 games. They lost both those games by giving up three-goal leads.

Sportsbooks have this one right as there shouldn’t be a clear favorite in the NHL odds given how both squads have struggled of late. After an emotional loss to the Islanders, our prediction is that the Penguins get back on the winning side as we enter the stretch run.

Pittsburgh Penguins Moneyline (-110)
