Sabres Impressing in New Year

Buffalo comes into Tuesday’s game boasting a 5-3-0 record since the calendar flipped over to 2024. The Sabres sit seventh in the Atlantic Division and nine points behind the Red Wings and Lightning, who hold the two Eastern Conference wild-card spots.

While the Sabres are playing better of late, they lost 3-1 to the Lightning in their last game on Saturday at KeyBank Arena. Buffalo could get a boost with the expected return of Jeff Skinner, who has missed the past five games with an upper-body injury.

Skinner leads the Sabres with 17 goals and is third on the team with 33 points, behind forward Casey Mittelstadt (39 points) and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (37 points).

The Sabres’ projected starting goalie for Tuesday’s game is Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who is 11-10-2 on the season with a .908 save percentage and 2.61 GAA. He’ll aim to bail out a Sabres defense that is allowing 3.15 goals per game, 18th in the NHL.

Ducks Aiming to End Skid

The Anaheim Ducks come into Tuesday’s game with an ugly 2-7-1 record in their past 10 contests. Anaheim has dropped three straight games, including a 5-2 home loss to the Rangers on Sunday that saw the team blow a 2-0 first-period lead.

Anaheim has been getting torched by the opposing team’s power plays this season, allowing nine power-play goals in their past eight games. The Ducks rank 21st in penalty kill percentage with a 77.6% mark, but fortunately, the Sabers have one of the weaker power plays (14.3%).

Anaheim has struggled to find the back of the net this season, averaging just 2.50 goals per game. Their power play has been a bit of a bright spot at 18.5% efficiency but sniper Troy Terry only has 11 total goals, while crafty star Trevor Zegras has been sidelined by injury.

Blueliner Olen Zellweger, Anaheim’s 34th overall selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, is expected to make his season debut Tuesday night. He’ll be manning the blueline in front of goalie John Gibson, who is 8-19-0 with a 3.10 GAA and .899 percentage.

Sabres vs Ducks Prediction

When it comes to making a Sabres vs Ducks prediction for Tuesday night, there isn’t much pointing to the underdog in this one. Unfortunately, the betting market is also thinking similarly, as the Sabres moneyline has moved from -160 to -180 at most sportsbooks.

Taking a look at the past 10 games for each team, the Sabres have a solid 54.90 CF% at even strength, while the Ducks have a 43.70 CF%. This isn’t even touching on special teams, where the Ducks haven’t been able to keep the puck out of their net while down a man.

Here are some other betting trends to note for Sabres vs Ducks:

  • Buffalo are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games when playing on the road against Anaheim
  • Anaheim are 0-6 SU in their last 6 games at home
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Buffalo’s last 5 games

This is the first meeting of the 2023-24 season for Buffalo and Anaheim, but they played twice the prior season. Buffalo won 7-3 and 6-3 in those games. With Skinner returning and the Sabres gaining some momentum, we’re riding with Buffalo on the puck line.

Sabres vs Ducks Pick:

  • BUF -1.5 (+146)
