  • Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken is currently the favorite in the Calder Trophy Odds
  • Owen Power and Mason McTavish began the season as co-favorites, but have slipped since preseason
  • Read below for the complete and current Calder Trophy odds, plus our best bet to win the award

Not only have the Seattle Kraken sprinted out of the gate to a playoff position in the Western Conference, but in Matty Beniers, they have the strong favorite in the 2023 Calder Trophy odds. The 20-year-old center is one of the main reasons the Kraken are solidly in a playoff spot over a quarter of the way through the season.

Online sportsbooks had Sabres defenseman Owen Power and Ducks forward Mason McTavish as co-favorites when the season began, but Beniers is the runaway chalk in the NHL public betting at odds of +225, and the two aforementioned players aren’t even his stiffest competition at this point.

Below, we list the updated Calder Trophy odds as well as give you some analysis on the movers and shakers to win this award. We’ll close things out with our best bet and prediction of who will get the hardware come season’s end.

Nobody from this past summer’s draft is a serious consideration in the NHL betting lines for the Calder at this point. First overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky has only three goals and five points for the Habs, while the man who was projected to go number one overall, Shane Wright, hasn’t been able to crack Seattle’s lineup most nights.

Matt Beniers favorite in Calder Trophy odds

After a brief stint where he proved he belonged in the NHL last season, Beniers has more than justified his spot in the Seattle lineup this year. There is a reason he was our NHL best bet in the 2023 Calder Trophy odds before the season began.

The University of Michigan product scored three goals and nine points in 10 games with Seattle last year and is pacing the rookie leaderboard this season in both goals and points.

Rookie Scoring Leaders

Player Goals Assists Points
Matty Beniers (SEA) 9 11 20
Cole Perfetti (WPG) 4 10 14
Matias Maccelli (ARZ) 1 12 13
Fabian Zetterlund (NJ) 4 8 12
JJ Peterka (BUF) 4 8 12
Jack Quinn (BUF) 4 7 11
Kent Johnson (CBJ) 5 6 11
Jake Sanderson (OTT) 1 10 11
Calen Addison (MIN) 1 10 11
Shane Pinto (OTT) 9 2 11
Mason McTavish (ANA) 4 7 11

While he doesn’t usually feature on Seattle’s first power play unit, he has seen time there when the Kraken struggle on the man advantage and as a member of the second unit, he’s notched three goals and five points. With 20 points in 22 games, Beniers is on pace for a 75-point season, which would be the most by a rookie in five years.

Other Contenders in the NHL Calder Trophy Odds

So who else can make a move in the NHL Betting lines to win the rookie of the year award? Watch out for a couple of goalies. Due to injuries, Vegas netminder Logan Thompson has taken the reins as the number one man in Sin City and ran with it. Odds on him to win the Calder have shortened from +2000 to the second-best betting option at +500.

Thompson’s 12 wins are second in the entire league behind only Linus Ullmark of the Bruins. The 25-year-old, who was playing Canadian university hockey just a few years ago, is also in the top 10 in both save percentage and goals against average. He actually may be worth a longshot NHL bet in the Vezina Trophy odds as well.

In Edmonton, an offseason signing Jack Campbell has been a nightmare in the crease. Stuart Skinner has been there to pick up the pieces. They’ve split duties so far this campaign, but Skinner’s numbers are much better and if Campbell can’t stop allowing four or more goals per game, you can bet Skinner will see the bulk of the action.

2023 Calder Trophy Pick & Prediction

Are there others flying under the radar or who have struggled so far to consider? Of course. Power hasn’t had quite the impact most would expect on the Sabres’ blueline, but he averages over 23 minutes of ice time per night. With that much action, production can go up quickly, although he has no goals this year after scoring two in just eight games last season.

Ducks forward, McTavish sees first-unit power play time on the Ducks so there’s always a good chance to rack up the points when you see a lot of ice on special teams. There’s also Shane Pinto of the Senators, who’s actually tied with Beniers in tallies by rookies with nine, and is +1600 in the NHL Calder Trophy betting odds.

However, the best bet remains Beniers who is trusted by the Kraken coaching staff and appears as if he’s getting better with each game. We hope you listened in the preseason when his odds were longer, but our NHL prediction is the Seattle center. He still feels like a steal at +225 to win the rookie of the year award.

Pick: Matty Beniers (+225)
