The Stanley Cup Finals is tied at 2-2, which shortens the series to a best-of-three. The Boston Bruins will play host for Game 5, which goes on Thursday, June 6th at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Bruins opened Game 5 as a -155 favorite while the Blues come in at +140. The total is set at 5.5 but heavily juiced on the under at -140, despite three of four games going over that number so far.

Blues Even Things Up In Game 4

The Blues showed up in a big way in Game 4 as they really took it to the Bruins. Shots on goal has been a big tell of effort in this series and the Blues outshot Boston 38-23 in this contest. Not surprisingly, the Blues have won the two games where they’ve put 37 or more shots on Tuukka Rask. In their two losses, they’ve averaged just 24.5 shots.

If there were any ill effects of getting blown out in Game 3, they didn’t show as a completely different Blues team came to play.

As for the Bruins, they were fighting uphill the whole night. They trailed 1-0 and 2-1, but fought back both times. It was a Ryan O’Reilly marker in the third period – his second of the night – that was the difference. Boston’s power play, which had scored four times in Game 3, was fruitless in two opportunities in Game 4.

Bruins Must Dictate The Pace

The stats in the Bruins wins compared to the stats in the losses paint a clear picture: the team that dictates the pace tends to win. That’s clear as the Bruins have just 23 shots on net in their two losses and the power play is 0-for-5 in those games. In the two wins, they’ve generated at least four power plays in each game while scoring five times.

What’s Chara’s Status?

It’s hard to imagine Bruins captain Zdeno Chara missing Game 5 but that’s a real possibility. He took a puck to the face from Brayden Schenn and bled profusely. It was so bad that they had to clean up blood off the ice. Chara was told not to play in the third period, but he still joined his team on the bench in a sign of solidarity.

If there is good news, it is that Game 5 is two days away, so an extra day off could help. The stalwart defenseman has played at least 19:38 per night in the first three games and was a +1, so he’ll be hard to replace.

Can Blues Steal Another Big Win On The Road?

The Blues have been down in every series this postseason and each time, they’ve earned crucial late-series wins on the road. In the first round, after blowing a 2-0 series lead, they went into Winnipeg and took Game 5. In the second round, they were down 3-2 to Dallas but won Game 6 at Dallas to survive. Versus San Jose, they won Game 5 in San Jose when the series was tied 2-2.

Can this Blues team pull it off one more time? While this team may be young and short on playoff experience, they have experience doing this, so they won’t be intimidated by the moment.

Best Bet for Game 5

If Chara doesn’t play in Game 5, I would take a shot with the Blues. They’ve done this before. More importantly, this team has absolutely zero quit to them. They’re a big dog in this spot but they’ve played much better on the road this postseason than they have at home.
