  • The Avalanche have taken a 2-0 series lead over the Golden Knights in the NHL Playoffs
  •  Vegas is now listed at +550 to comeback and win the series
  • Read below to see if there’s any value backing the Knights as heavy underdogs

The powerhouse Colorado Avalanche have taken a 2-0 series lead over the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 2 of the 2021 NHL Playoffs. With the series shifting to Sin City, Jared Bednar’s team is listed as -835 favorites to close it out and advance onto Round 3.

Vegas is listed as +550 underdogs to make a comeback and eliminate Colorado. The Golden Knights turned in a great performance in Game 2 but lost the game on a costly penalty in overtime.

Should you bet on Vegas making a comeback, or are the Avalanche too much for the Golden Knights?

Can Anyone Stop the Avalanche?

The beat goes on for the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs have won six straight games to begin the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs and are on a 10-game winning streak overall. Colorado has outscored their playoff opponents by a 30-10 margin and have a power-play operating at 43.5%.

It’s hard to see any team winning three of five games against Colorado given the elite level they are operating at. Teams that take a 2-0 lead in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series are 334-51 (.867) all-time winning the series. The Avalanche are not the team to bet against defying those odds.

Colorado has a Vezina Trophy candidate with Philipp Grubauer, while Cale Makar is expected to earn a Norris Trophy nomination. Furthermore, Nathan MacKinnon is the most explosive player remaining in the playoffs and leads all players with 13 points. He’s the clear favorite in the updated Conn Smythe odds for good reason.

Fleury is X-Factor For Knights’ Comeback

While the odds aren’t in their favor, Vegas still has enough talent to make this a series. The Golden Knights possess a Vezina Trophy nominee of their own in Marc-Andre Fleury, who owns a .924 save percentage this postseason.  The “Flower” made his first start of the series in Game 2 after Vegas went with Robin Lehner for the opening game.

Both Lehner and Fleury were underwhelming in their first starts of the series, but it’s hard to blame goaltending. The Golden Knights are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the postseason and couldn’t get the job done in Game 2 despite outshooting Colorado 40-23 through regulation.

Even if Fleury stands on his head in Game 3, Vegas won’t win if the goal-scoring doesn’t show up. Players like Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson, and Reilly Smith need to produce more given the production from Colorado’s top forwards. Vegas has been held to two or fewer goals in four of their past five games.

The Final Word

The updated price for Vegas is intriguing given they finished with the same number of points as Colorado during the regular season. This line opened with Colorado only -200 favorites as the two teams split the season series. The playoffs are a different animal, however, and it’s clear the Avalanche are a tier above the rest.

Vegas outshot Colorado in Game 2, but high-danger chances were 16-11 in favor of the Avalanche. Fleury is capable of stealing a game or two for the Golden Knights in Vegas, but it’s not going to be enough. The Avalanche have a goalie just as capable and are much more explosive offensively. Not to mention, the Avs are 19-0-1 on home ice since March 8th.

This is a wager to stay away from given the heavy adjusted price for Colorado. You’re better off looking at the Stanley Cup odds, where the stacked Avalanche are still available at plus-money to capture Lord Stanley.
