  • The odds to be the 2020 Republican candidate have re-opened but Donald Trump is a massive -5000 favorite to win the nomination.
  • Trump has already amassed 833 delegates. Bill Weld is the only other person to earn a delegate and he’s picked up just one.

After United States President Donald Trump made it through impeachment, his approval numbers hit a three-year high of 44.6%. Since then, the coronavirus and the stock market crash have thrashed his approval ratings have dipped and chances of being reelected.

It’s gotten so bad that sportsbooks have re-opened the 2020 Republican presidential nominee odds for Trump to be the GOP nominee for the 2020 Election. Is there any value betting on anyone else or will Trump, in fact, still be the Republicans’ nominee for the 2020 Presidential Election?

TLDR: Trump Will Be he Nominee

If you’re looking for the Coles Notes of this article or the TLDR (which stands for Too Long, Didn’t Read): Trump will be the Republicans nominee in 2020. It’s a bit bizarre that we’re even seeing the odds being rehung and opening this up for debate. Now let’s dive into why he’s going to be the guy they go with.

Approval Rating Among Republicans Is Through the Roof

Trump is one of those politicians who is completely bulletproof and his base will ride with him no matter what. That means that any type of change from Trump to anyone else is going to be devastating to Republicans and they simply won’t stand for it. He’s well over 90% approval from his own party.

Take the coronavirus outbreak and the latest polling numbers on how he’s handling it. 87% of Republicans approve of the job he’s doing. To remove him from him the ticket and put someone like Mike Pence or Nikki Haley in charge will start a revolt.

If you take a look at the primary voting, while much of the focus is on the Democratic side of things (and rightfully so), Trump is receiving record numbers of support in votes and he’s basically not even running against anyone. Republicans love him that much that they come out to vote when there’s no one else.

In Vermont and Minnesota – two clearly blue states – Trump’s vote totals crushed every past incumbent’s total in the last 40 years. Even in California, Trump somehow racked up nearly 1.5 million votes. That goes to show how much he’s loved by his party. They’re not going to run anyone else.

Economy Is Still Strong

While there is no question that the economy is going to take a hit from the coronavirus, it’s still a big question mark as to what it will do to the American economy. Remember, the economy had been roaring under Trump and although a recession hurts him, it’s not exactly his fault.

Unemployment – especially for African Americans and Latinos – are at all-time lows, wages were going up and the stock market was at an all-time. A lot of that has changed because of the virus but it doesn’t mean that good companies are all of the sudden bad now.

This will undoubtedly hurt Trump’s chances of being re-elected and we’ve already seen that with his Presidential Election odds dropping a bit. He was at about -180 and now he’s down to -134. At any rate, this won’t change him from being the GOP nominee.

Is This Prop Questioning If He Has Coronavirus?

I can’t quite gauge why this prop has hit the board. Trump has made it through impeachment and he’s cleaning up in the primaries. I can’t really see any normal reason why the Republican Party would pull out the rug from under him and anger their whole base.

That makes me wonder if this prop is coronavirus-related. Maybe it’s asking if Trump gets the coronavirus and can’t campaign for a month or two? It’s possible as today’s news reported that Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz came in contact with someone who had COVID-19 and then flew on Air Force One today.

Even so, this seems like a stretch. The coronavirus seems to impact most healthy people quite mildly and Trump would get the best of care. Many are recovering and Trump would be expected to too. I’m not sure why this prop is on the board but I’m fully expecting Trump to be the GOP nominee. It doesn’t make sense to go with anyone else.
