My buddy Mike recently taught me more about cast iron skillets than I ever expected to know.

Apparently, you don’t scrub them.

You don’t soak them.

You might not even be allowed to look at them the wrong way.

Every time I offered what seemed like a perfectly reasonable cleaning suggestion, Mike looked at me like I’d just proposed putting ketchup on a filet mignon.

Then he explained why.

The older a cast iron skillet gets, the better it becomes. Years of use build up the seasoning, and if you take care of it, people will pass it down from one generation to the next.

Chicagoland Speedway reminds me of Mike’s cast iron skillet.

It isn’t the newest track on the NASCAR schedule, but that’s exactly what makes it special. Years of racing have seasoned the surface into one of the best intermediate tracks on the circuit. Tires wear out, multiple grooves come alive, and drivers can search for speed instead of simply holding the throttle wide open.

That’s exactly what we want for DFS.

Chicagoland 400 DFS Strategy

Sunday’s 267-lap race offers enough dominator points to reward drivers who spend the afternoon out front. At the same time, Chicagoland’s worn-out surface should create plenty of passing opportunities, making position differential just as important.

That’s one of the reasons we keep coming back to Toyota.

Kansas carries the highest weight among our comparable tracks, and Toyota dominated that race earlier this season. The manufacturer placed four drivers inside the top five, Tyler Reddick went to Victory Lane and Denny Hamlin recorded the highest SpeedwaySteve2 Race Score of the season despite a late caution dropping him to fourth.

With Toyota once again grading out as the top manufacturer in our model, we’re more than happy to build around Hamlin and Reddick this weekend.

Chicagoland 400 Expert DFS Projections

Denny Hamlin ($11,000) | Starting Position: 1st

There’s usually some hesitation when it comes to paying top dollar for the pole sitter.

This week isn’t one of those weeks.

Our model projects Hamlin to win the race, and his comparable-track production explains why. Across our weighted comp tracks, Hamlin has averaged 42.0 laps led, 24.0 fastest laps, 48.8 quality passes and an 83.9% Top-15 Lap Rate while producing the highest SpeedwaySteve2 Race Score in the field.

Those are elite dominator numbers.

Starting on the pole eliminates any position differential upside, but if Hamlin performs the way he has on similar tracks all season, he’ll more than make up for it through laps led and fastest laps.

Tyler Reddick ($10,700) | Starting Position: 13th

Reddick is the perfect complement to Hamlin.

While Hamlin gives us one path to a tournament-winning score, Reddick gives us another.

Our model projects Reddick to finish third, and his comparable-track numbers are outstanding. He’s averaged 20.1 laps led, 21.7 fastest laps, a field-best 53.9 quality passes, and an 88.3% Top-15 Lap Rate on our weighted comparable tracks this season.

The Kansas comparison only strengthens the case.

Reddick won there earlier this season, and if Chicagoland races the way our model expects, the No. 45 Toyota should spend the afternoon carving through traffic once again. Pairing him with Hamlin isn’t simply a Toyota stack. It’s a bet on the manufacturer our model believes has the clearest advantage this weekend.

Daniel Suarez ($7,700) | Starting Position: 26th

Suarez has quietly become one of our favorite values on the slate.

Our model projects him to gain meaningful position differential, and his comparable-track production suggests there’s plenty of upside if he simply races to expectation. Suarez has averaged 27.7 quality passes, 4.0 fastest laps, 2.9 laps led, and a 54.5% Top-15 Lap Rate on this week’s weighted comp tracks.

He doesn’t need to threaten for the victory, even though he found one at Charlotte for the SpeedwaySteve2 faithful.

A clean afternoon and another drive into the top 20 would make him an excellent return on a $7,700 salary.

Corey Heim ($7,500) | Starting Position: 28th

Heim continues to climb every week.

He’s one of this week’s designated Risers after posting the fourth-best SpeedwaySteve2 Practice Metric, and our model projects him to gain nearly 10 positions on Sunday.

His comparable-track numbers also stand out for a driver in this price range, averaging 17.3 laps led, 8.5 fastest laps, 19.0 quality passes, and a 47.9% Top-15 Lap Rate.

If the practice speed carries over into the race, Heim has one of the higher ceilings among the mid-tier options.

Austin Cindric ($7,300) | Starting Position: 23rd

Cindric may be our favorite point-per-dollar play this weekend.

He ranked second in the SpeedwaySteve2 Practice Metric, and our model projects him to finish around 16th despite starting 23rd.

The historical production backs that up.

Across our weighted comparable tracks, Cindric has averaged 7.3 laps led, 3.4 fastest laps, 31.3 quality passes, and a 56.5% Top-15 Lap Rate. Those numbers point toward a driver capable of outperforming both his salary and starting position.

Michael McDowell ($6,100) | Starting Position: 38th

Sometimes the obvious value is still the correct value.

McDowell rolls off 38th, giving him one of the safest position differential floors in the field.

Our model projects him to gain more than a dozen positions, and his comparable-track production has been stronger than many people realize. He’s averaged 21.8 quality passes, 4.0 fastest laps, and a 47.0% Top-15 Lap Rate against this week’s weighted competition.

He doesn’t need a spectacular finish.

He simply needs to survive, move forward and capitalize on the tremendous position differential available from the final starting spot.
