- Borussia Dortmund has won the signature of Norwegian phenom Erling Braut Haaland
- The 19-year-old joins the German giants from Salzburg on a contract through 2024
- Does his signing help Dortmund’s title chances?
After much anticipation on just where Erling Haaland would end up in January after his breathtaking form this year as a 19-year-old for Salzburg, it looks like one European giant has snagged the wonderkid up. Dortmund has agreed to a four-year contract with the youngster, bringing him to Signal Iduna Park in the new year. Lucien Favre’s side has beaten the likes of Manchester United and Juventus to the signing of Haaland, with numerous other huge clubs in Europe showing serious interest in his abilities.
The black and yellow currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga with 30 points, just three points behind Bayern Munich who are in third spot. Dortmund’s Bundesliga title odds have taken a slide in the past few weeks though, with an average of +850 on December 9, to +1200 three weeks later. They ended 2019 with a 3-3 draw against league leaders RB Leipzig after blowing a 2-0 lead thanks to two huge mistakes in their own end, then also lost to Hoffenheim just days later.
2020 Bundesliga Title Odds
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Bayern Munich | -200 |
RB Leipzig | +240 |
Borussia Dortmund | +1200 |
Borussia Monchengladbach | +1400 |
Schalke | +10000 |
Bayer Leverkusen | +15000 |
Freiburg | +50000 |
Hoffenheim | +50000 |
Wolfsburg | +50000 |
Odds taken. Dec 29.
Despite sitting in third place, Bayern Munich still has the best odds to win their eighth straight Bundesliga title with half of the season still ahead. Leipzig, who has been extremely impressive this year led by marksman Timo Werner who’s scored 18 goals, currently has +240 odds to win the German top flight in 2020. Dortmund sits way behind them at +1200.
Haaland Lighting up Europe
Although goal-scoring hasn’t been their most notable issue this term, adding an attacker of Haaland’s caliber to their already impressive list of strikers will certainly not hurt Dortmund. The 19-year-old has taken Europe by storm this year, netting 24 goals in just 20 appearances across all competitions.
He first gained notoriety when he scored a hat-trick in the first half of Salzburg’s 6-0 thrashing of Genk on Matchday one of the Champions League group stage in September. Haaland went on to score eight goals in just six matches in European competition. In the Austrian Bundesliga, he’s been absolutely unstoppable as well, snagging 16 goals and four assists in just 14 appearances, including three more hat-tricks.
There was much speculation that Haaland could end up in the Premier League after his father Alf-Inge Haaland played for Manchester City and Leeds. But Dortmund will be a great stepping stone for Haaland and there is definitely a high chance we could see him in England’s top flight in the future once he’s more set up for success in the Premier League.
Bayern Munich is Best Bet
The scoring flair that Haaland will bring to Dortmund will be very entertaining to watch, but his signing alone shouldn’t make them title favorites. They already have many clinical attackers, from Jadon Sancho to Paco Alcacer to Julian Brandt. However, their vulnerability this season has been in their backline, conceding 24 goals in 17 matches.

Bayern are starting to heat up, grabbing three straight victories heading into the new year. They have scored 11 goals in their last three matches, sitting just four points behind first-place Leipzig. Monchengladbach is playing impressive football in second place, but sooner or later, they will most likely slide.
Dortmund will definitely finish top three, but Bayern Munich should be the favorites to win yet another Bundesliga title in 2020.
Pick: Bayern Munich -200
