MLS is back from the World Cup break, and the marquee game is in South Florida. Inter Miami host Chicago Fire on Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Nu Stadium, streaming on Apple TV. Second place meets third in the Eastern Conference.

The headline is Robert Lewandowski. The 37-year-old joined Chicago on a free transfer, announced June 29, ending a 20-year European career at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. His debut was supposed to come last Thursday against Vancouver, but wildfire smoke postponed it.

My Inter Miami vs Chicago Fire prediction is a shootout that the visitors steal. Miami lose their two best players to post-tournament rest while Chicago arrive fresh, and the Fire have quietly had the better of this fixture.

Miami still score plenty. They won four of their last five before the break, including a 6-4 win over Philadelphia and a 5-3 win at Cincinnati. Those same games show a back line that leaks badly, and Lewandowski is exactly the finisher to punish it.

Getting the fresher team at plus-money is my favorite number on the board. Chicago sit third at 8-4-2 with 26 points, five back of Miami, and they won their last three before the break. Miami loses Messi and De Paul on the same night they face a rebuilt Fire attack.

Total-Goals Pick: Over 3.5 (51¢ at Kalshi)

These teams combined for eight goals the last time they met at Nu Stadium. Miami’s last two wins produced 10 and eight goals, and neither side defends like a team that wants a 1-0. Kalshi’s 51¢ beats the -125 on the same total at BetMGM.

Team-Total Pick: Chicago Over 1.5 Goals (55¢ at Kalshi)

Lewandowski walks into a Miami defense that conceded four in the 6-4 win over Philadelphia and three more in the 5-3 at Cincinnati. Chicago also scored five here last time out. Backing the Fire for multiple goals is the simplest way to bet the debut.

Berhalter has been direct about the plan, calling Lewandowski the focal point of the attack and handing him the No. 9 shirt. He is the shortest price on the goalscorer board, ahead of Luis Suarez at +140, and he meets a defense that has been shipping goals all season.

Is Messi Playing vs Chicago Fire?

No. Messi is out, and it is not an injury. FIFA and FIFPRO guidance grants every World Cup final participant at least 21 consecutive days of rest, and Messi played the full 120 minutes of Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain.

He is resting in Rosario and will also miss the MLS All-Star Game on July 29, cleared by the league without sanction. De Paul sits out for the same reason. Both target a return on August 5 for Miami’s Leagues Cup opener against Atletico San Luis.

That leaves Luis Suarez as the main finisher for Angel Guillermo Hoyos, with Casemiro among Miami’s summer additions. Lewandowski leads the line for Chicago, and Gregg Berhalter has called him the focal point of the attack. The Fire also have an agreement in principle to send Golden Boot leader Hugo Cuypers and his 13 goals to Monterrey.
