Minnesota United will be looking to make history against Los Angeles FC when the two teams meet on Wednesday, July 28. No Major League Soccer team has ever won twice at Banc of California Stadium, but the Loons will attempt to be the first, hoping to build on their 2-0 win there back in September 2019.
However, Bob Bradley’s team has shown flashes of its home resilience of late, including battling back from an 0-2 deficit on Saturday to force a draw, pushing its unbeaten home streak up to four games.

Loons On Top
Minnesota United is one of just five MLS teams with a winning record against LAFC over its four largely dominant seasons in MLS and is unbeaten in its last three matches against Bradley’s club. MNUFC is 2-1-1 in four meetings with Los Angeles.

However, Wednesday’s match will be the first time the two sides have met in almost two years, since September 29, when they played to a 1-1 draw at Allianz Field in Minneapolis. That marked the second meeting in a matter of weeks, coming shortly after the Loons ran out 2-0 winners in LA on September 1.
Vela In Form
The Mexican striker got off to a slow start in 2021, scoring just once in his first nine games, but has rounded into form of late. The former Arsenal forward has now found the net in three straight games after beginning LAFC’s rally on Saturday against Vancouver.

And the former MLS MVP is likely good value to continue that rich vein of form tonight against Minnesota. LAFC players have gone on four-game scoring streaks on four different occasions, and Vela has accounted for three of those.

In addition, he scored the only goal for LAFC the last time the two teams met in 2019 for a total of one goal in two career appearances against Minnesota.
Road Woes for Minnesota
The Loons’ 0-4 run to start the season has been left firmly in the rearview mirror, as Adrian Heath’s team has rebounded to win six of its last 10 games. On top of that, the team has lost just once and has averaged an otherworldly 2.1 points per game over that streak. (For context, LAFC averaged 2.12 points during its MLS record-setting 72-point 2019 season)

However, of those six, only one has been on the road, namely Minnesota’s 1-0 win at Portland in record heat on June 26. It’s something of a surprising development for a team that went 4-4-4 on the road last season.

Miller Time
There is something of a controversy brewing amongst the forward ranks in Minnesota, with highly paid striker Ramon Abila again not part of the match-day squad.
Adrian Heath said after #MNUFC training that striker Ramon Abila won’t travel with team. He was not included as starter or sub for Saturday’s game win over Portland. “We can only pick 20. We pick 20 who we think are most suitable for that particular game.”

The former Boca Juniors attacker hasn’t played since July 7, when he got a late red card against Colorado, and though he was available following suspension for the Loon’s win over Portland on the weekend, Heath elected not to include him. He also chose not to bring the Argentine on this two-game road trip to LA and then Salt Lake City this weekend.
However, any controversy upfront is balanced out by the stability presented by Tyler Miller in the Minnesota goal. The Loons’ goalkeeper is second in MLS with a goals-against-average of 0.7, having stopped 29 of the 37 shots fired his way. The former LAFC stopper has also posted five clean sheets in 10 starts this season, giving Minnesota a platform for success on any given night.
Best bet: Draw (+390)
