The second-ever Leagues Cup will finally be crowned a new winner on Wednesday night as Liga MX standouts Club Leon meets the Seattle Sounders in the final of the competition. The kick-off is set for 10 PM EST at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The 2020 edition of this tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Cruz Azul beat Tigres UANL in the grand finale in its debut year in 2019.

Leon took care of business in the semifinals against Mexican rivals Puma in a 2-0 victory, while the Sounders just slipped past Santos Laguna thanks to an emphatic winner in injury time from Raul Ruidiaz.

León Breezing Through League Cup

Although León is in just fourth place in Liga MX, they’ve been utterly dominant in this competition. The quarterfinals saw the Mexican side throttle Sporting Kansas City 6-1, with five different players getting on the scoresheet. The semis were a breeze for Leon as well, winning by two goals against Pumas.

However, Ariel Holan’s men were handed a clear advantage early on when former Real Salt Lake defender Sebastian Saucedo was sent off in the 6th minute. Santiago Colombatto and Santiago Ormeno both fired home a goal in each half to book their ticket to the final. León’s form in league play hasn’t been great lately though, going winless in four matches. The club suffered a 1-0 defeat to Juarez on Saturday, who are in 13th spot.

Seattle will have several players to keep an eye on here in the final third. Angel Mena has been lethal in Liga MX, already netting four times. He’s an extremely dangerous winger who is capable of brilliance at any given moment. Colombatto is also a key figure, having scored in both the quarters and semis. Midfielder Omar Fernandez, who scored a brace against Sporting KC, is another attacker that the Sounders will need to keep at bay.

Sounders Chasing New Hardware

Seattle has been one of the strongest teams across the last number of years, capturing the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019. This is a brand new trophy they have a chance to win and surely, the Sounders will be hungry to get the job done.

Brian Schmetzer’s side has been extremely impressive in the Leagues Cup and has beat some very strong clubs along the way. Seattle hammered Tigres UANL 3-0 at the quarterfinal stage thanks to goals from each of their attackers in Fredy Montero, Raul Ruidiaz, and the now-injured Nicolas Lodeiro.

The semifinals were an absolute battle for the Sounders though, with Santos going head to head with the MLS outfit. It looked like extra time was a given until Leo Chu picked out Diaz with a picturesque through ball in the 93rd minute, with the Peruvian’s first attempt denied by Santos keeper Gibran Lajud before Diaz put away his rebound to send Lumen Field into absolute chaos.

Domestically, the Sounders are in respectable form. They’re currently trailing Kansas City by just one point for top spot in the Western Conference but did lose on the weekend to Real Salt Lake. Goals have been few and far between in Seattle’s last five matches across all competitions, scoring just four times. Ruidiaz will be the main man up top in Vegas, having already bagged two goals in this tournament. He’s also second in the Golden Boot race in the MLS, netting 14 in 23 appearances this term.

Club León vs Seattle Sounders Prediction

Both clubs don’t exactly score a lot of goals. León only put six past Sporting KC because they basically played a reserve squad against the Mexicans. That being said, the Under is going to offer value on Wednesday. While Seattle and León are coming off defeats in league play, I have to take the Sounders here. Less travel and they’re known to show up on the big stage.

Pick: Seattle Sounders
